Big Third Quarter Helps No. 12 MIT Defeat Wellesley, 4-0

THE BASICS:

- Records: No. 12 MIT (11-3, 5-1 NEWMAC); Wellesley (6-8, 2-3 NEWMAC)

- Location: Wellesley, Mass. (Butler Stadium)

- The Lead: A pair of goals in the third quarter helped propel No. 12 MIT to a 4-0 victory over Wellesley College in NEWMAC field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Following a scoreless first quarter, senior Paige Forester (Glencoe, Ill.) put MIT on the board in the 24th minute. After intercepting a pass on the far sideline, she charged the cage and drew goalie Kyra Deehr-Lewis off her line. Deehr-Lewis slid to the ground; however, Forester dribbled around her and lifted the ball to the near post.

- The Engineers increased their lead in the 36th minute when sophomore Alice Zehner (Gladwyne, Pa.) sent a feed to first-year Bailey McIntyre (Concord, Mass.) who one-timed it to the near post. Exactly 1:50 later, MIT's advantage grew to 3-0. After dodging several defenders, McIntyre hit the ball from the top of the arc through traffic and senior Erica Radler (Wayne, N.J.) tipped it in at the far post.

- The visitors capped the scoring with 7:45 left to play. In transition, Forester sent a hard pass from the near endline which was collected by first-year Marisa Montione (Charlotte, N.C.) inside the top of the arc. Montione then struck the ball to the far post for her second goal of the season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Senior Kiely Smiga-McManus (Etna, N.H.) and sophomore Anna Duncan (St. Louis, Mo.) split the game in net as they both recorded a save.
