The Lead:Â The MIT sailing team took part in three regattas over the weekend and held their own against some top competition and challenging weather conditions.

- Conditions were not ideal with little to no wind throughout the weekend which caused numerous races to be abandoned.

Dana Haig (Beach Haven, N.J.), senior
Grace Mao (Overland Park, Kan.), and sophomore
Shayne Bersin (Port Washington, N.Y.) finished in third with 61 points, four behind Navy for second. The Engineers held off Dartmouth by one point to secure a top-three finish. The team won two races during the event.

Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.), junior
Jemma Schroder (Menlo Park, Calif.), and sophomore
Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.) finished with 130 points and a sixth-place finish in the 'B' Division.

- Bersin "The conditions were not what the team is used to, with waves and current differentials over the course. Being on the right side of the course was pretty important, and it changed throughout the day. All in all, the team worked really hard, securing a 3rd place finish in A division!"

- Conditions were also challenging for MIT at the Captain Hurst Bowl with light wind on Saturday. The wind picked up and then died that led to abandoned races. Sunday also featured a light wind and more abandoned races.

Maks Groom (Seattle, Wash.) and senior
Wendy Wu (Andover, Mass.) led the Engineers 'A' Division boat to a fifth-place finish as they accumulated 41 points and three top-five finishes.

- Â In the 'B' Division, sophomore
Julius Heitkoetter (Austin, Texas) and senior
Abby VanLonkhuyzen (Yarmouth, Maine) finished ninth with 49 points and a third-place finish.

- Junior
Matthew Elliot (Waterford, Mich.) and junior
Karen Liberman (Sao Paulo, Brazil) finished with 55 points, and in the 'C' Division to earn a tenth-place finish overall. They earned a third-place finish in the 5C race.

Alex Abate (Kemah, Texas) and sophomore
Mercedes Escandon (Brick, N.J.) finished ninth with 42 points and got a win in the 2A race.

- In the 'B' Division, first-year
Alex Horne (Broomfield, Colo.) and sophomore
Yitan Zhu (Katy, Texas) finished 12th with 50 points. They earned a third-place finish in the 2B race.

- It will be another busy week in the water for the Engineers as the team will race in a number of regattas including the Coed Atlantic Coast Championships, the Yale Women's Trophy, and the Oberg Trophy.
