Late Rally Falls Short on Senior Day in 31-24 Final

THE BASICS:

- Score: U.S. Coast Guard Academy 31, MIT 24

- Records: MIT (2-5, 0-4 NEWMAC); U.S. Coast Guard Academy (3-5, 1-3 NEWMAC)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium)

- The Lead: On Senior Day, a late rally came up short as the MIT football team fell to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy by a 31-24 final. Prior to the game, the team honored the 15 seniors/graduate students who were appearing in their final career home game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- With four minutes left in the first, Coast Guard was flagged for pass interference and that put the Engineers just outside the red zone. On the next play, junior Brady Klein (Washington, Ill.) took the ball off the right side of the line and found the end zone for the 7-0 advantage. The Bears answered in the final seconds of the first quarter as Finnegan Hall converted a 27-yard field goal to cap off a 12-play, 65-yard drive to make it 7-3.

- The score remained that way until the 6:10 mark of the second as Coast Guard was punting from deep inside its own territory. First-year Patrick Haertel (Cumming, Georgia) blocked the kick though and senior Brady Sullivan (Littleton, Colo.) fell on it in the end zone for the touchdown to push MIT out to a 14-3 edge. The Bears had a chance to kick the ball out of the back of the end zone for the safety, but it was Sullivan who took advantage of MIT's 10th blocked kick of the season.

- Sophomore Nico Bulhof (Bryan, Texas) closed out the first-half scoring with 57 seconds on the clock, connecting from 31 yards out for the 17-3 lead at the break.

- Coast Guard got on the board with a touchdown just 3:35 into the third as quarterback Joey Armentrout scored up the middle from one yard out to cap a 12-play, 73-yard drive that made it 17-10. The Bears tied the game with 27 seconds left in the third when Spencer McMillion took the handoff and outran everyone from 49 yards out to tie things at 17-17 heading to the fourth.

- In the fourth, the MIT defense had Coast Guard in a third and long situation with just under 11 minutes left. The Engineers were flagged for a pass interference penalty though to put the visitors into the red zone, where Armentrout took it up the middle and dodged a number of tacklers en route to the 17-yard TD and the 24-17 lead.

- McMillion made it a 28-0 Coast Guard scoring run with 3:21 left as he found the end zone from 17 yards to cap a nine-play, 70-yard drive as CGA now led 31-17.

- MIT junior Marco Cesaratto (Falls Church, Va.) wasn't done though as he led MIT on a five-play, 69-yard drive that ended in a 25-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Andrew Hutchison (San Diego, Calif.) in the corner of the end zone to cut the lead back to one score at 31-24.

- The Engineers had one last opportunity in the final minute, but it was the Coast Guard defense that stood up to give the Bears their first NEWMAC victory of the season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Overall, the Engineers rushed the ball for 153 yards to go along with 134 yards passing from first-year Chase Harmon (West Linn, Ore.). Hutchison was the leading receiver for MIT with a career-high eight receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown.

- McMillion led the Coast Guard run game with 208 yards and two touchdowns, along with 190 yards passing from Armentrout as he completed 19-of-34 passes.

- Defensively, graduate student Paul Calvetti (Ridgewood, N.J.) led the Engineers with 16 total tackles that included a sack and two tackles for a loss. Junior Stan Lacksen (Watkinsville, Ga.) was also in double digits with 10 total tackles and a forced fumble.
