Men's Soccer Falls to WPI, 3-1, in Regular Season Finale

THE BASICS:
 
- Score: WPI - 3, MIT - 1
 
- Records: MIT (8-8-0, 4-3-0 NEWMAC), WPI (7-4-6, 3-2-2 NEWMAC)
 
- Location: Worcester, Mass. (H. Carr Field)
 
- The Lead: The MIT men's soccer could not rebound from a 3-0 deficit as MIT fell at WPI to conclude the regular season with a 3-1 road loss.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
- WPI grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Luke Savoie sent a corner into Aaron Vaz who headed the ball into the goal at 11:45.
 
- The home team extended its lead a few minutes later off another corner as Savoie's kick deflected right over the hand of senior Paarth Desai (Lawrenceville, Ga.) at 22:54.
 
- MIT had shots from senior Hendrik Mayer (Montville, N.J.) and sophomore Aidan Hallinan (Carlsbad, Calif.) saved by Roe Hendrick.
 
- Luke Reid sent a header to Christopher Martenso who put the ball into the bottom right corner at 46:32 to put WPI up by three.
 
- Senior Will Seiple (Boulder, Colo.) had a scoring opportunity turned away by Hendrick at 54:08.
 
- MIT broke through in the 82nd minute with a goal from Hallinan at 81:07 as he intercepted a pass and dribbled down for the score.
 
- The Engineers looked to get closer to WPI with four shots in the final minutes, but none found the back of the net.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- MIT earned the third seed in the NEWMAC Tournament.
 
- MIT held a 20-12 advantage in shots, but WPI held the advantage in shots on goal (7-5), and corner kicks (5-2).
 
- In goal, Desai made three saves and fell to 5-5 on the season. Junior Lukas Hanson-Puffer (London, England) played the second half and made one save.
 
- Hallinan is now second on the team in goals (4) and points (10).
 
UP NEXT:
 
- MIT will play at Emerson on Thursday, November 3rd in the semifinals of the NEWMAC Championship.
