Sailing Wraps Up Fall Season With Three Regattas Over the Weekend

The Lead:  The MIT sailing team concluded its fall season with three regattas over the weekend. The Engineers were met with some challenging conditions, including a lack of wind which forced the Nickerson Trophy to be deemed incomplete.

SCHELL TROPHY | New London, Conn. | 9th of 18 (249 points)

- In the conference championship event, the Engineers dealt with light and tricky conditions with lots of current on the Thames River.

- Junior Sam Bruce (Severna Park, Md.) and senior Abby VanLonkhuyzen (Yarmouth, Maine) led the 'A' Division boat to a seventh-place finish with 121 points. They finished the regatta with five top-five finishes.

- In the 'B' Division, junior Maks Groom (Seattle, Wash.) and senior Wendy Wu (Andover, Mass.) placed tenth with 128 points and three top-five finishes.

VICTORIAN URN TROPHY | Providence, R.I. | 8th of 15 (190 points)

- The Engineers had a strong showing in the 'A' Division with a second-place finish with 67 points. Led by graduate student Dana Haig (Beach Haven, N.J), sophomore Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.), senior Grace Mao (Overland Park, Kan.), and sophomore Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.) the team had six top-five finishes with one victory.

- In the 'B' Division, senior Emily Scherer (Oshkosh, Wis.), sophomore Lucy Brock (Austin, Texas), sophomore Yitan Zhu (Katy, Texas), and junior Jemma Schroder (Menlo Park, Calif.) finished 12th with 123 points as they finished in the top-10 five times.

NICKERSON TROPHY | Medford, Mass. | Incomplete - 14th of 16 (71 points)

- With little to no wind over the weekend, not enough races were completed, and the regatta was declared incomplete with no winner declared. MIT sat in 14th at the end of Sunday.

- First-years Alex Horne (Broomfield, Colo.) and Shrika Eddula (Dallas, Texas) placed 13th in the 'A' Division with 50 points with only four races completed.

- In the 'B' Division only two races were completed. First-years Brooke Barry (West Hartford, Conn.) and Lucas Escandon (Brock, N.J.) finished 11th with 21 points and earned the 11th spot over BU by finishing ahead of them in the last race.
