Â
- The Lead: In the 2022 season finale on Saturday afternoon, the MIT football team came away with a 21-14 road victory over WPI at H.Carr Field.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- The Engineers jumped out to an early 7-0 lead as senior
Jay Theriault (Boxford, Mass.) capped a six-play, 31-yard drive with a one-yard rush. The drive was made possible by a forced fumble by senior
Brady Sullivan (Littleton, Colo.) that was recovered by first-year
Lucky Deignan (Indianapolis, Ind.) at the WPI 31-yard line.
Â
- MIT made it a 14-0 score late in the second quarter as senior
Dennis Gastel (Lincoln, R.I.) pulled down a five-yard touchdown pass, wrapping up a 10-play, 70-yard scoring drive. WPI answered just 52 seconds later with a 28-yard touchdown pass from
Brendan Olexa to
Bryce Curtin to cut the lead down to 14-7 at the break.
Â
- Following a scoreless third quarter, Theriault and the Engineers found the end zone again with 4:16 remaining in the fourth as he scored from two yards out for the 21-7 advantage. That touchdown was also made possible by a WPI turnover as first-year
Paul Gregory (Guilford, Conn.) recovered a fumble on a punt from sophomore
Nico Bulhof (Bryan, Texas).
Â
- WPI answered with an 11-play, 75-yard drive that took just 3:14 to pull within a touchdown with 1:02 on the clock.
Dante Coccagnia completed seven passes on the drive for the Worcester Engineers, including the six-yard touchdown pass to
Isaac Frederique.
Â
- A WPI onside kick attempt was recovered by MIT as the visitors ran out the clock for the win, which was MIT's first in Worcester since a 16-4 victory in 1897. The all-time series is now even at 9-9-1.
