MIT Women's Soccer Season Comes to a Heartbreaking End to Williams in PKs in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 11 Williams - 0, No. 16  MIT- 0 (Williams wins 3-2 in PKs)

- Records: MIT (15-5-3), Williams (11-4-3)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field)

- The Lead: The 2022 season came to a heartbreaking end for the No. 16 MIT women's soccer team as the Engineers fell to No. 11 Williams in penalty kicks in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon on Roberts Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The first 45 minutes of play did not produce a goal, however, both teams had opportunities to put a goal on the board as graduate student Karenna Groff (Weston, Mass.) had hermshot saved by Williams goaltender Leyla Kamshad.

- Claire Tolliver had her shot saved by senior Lauren Castle (Ridgefield, Conn.), and Ava Simunovic had her scoring chance blocked by the MIT defense.

- Groff had another scoring chance denied, and first-year Sean Luk (Bel Air, MD.) sent two shots just over the net.

- Williams opened the second half with four-straight shots, one that was saved by senior Ava Gillikin (Flemington, N.J.).

- Groff looked to break the scoreless tie, but her two shots in the 83rd minute were both blocked, and a shot by sophomore Ashley English (Sheboygan, Wis.) sailed high as the teams went into overtime knotted at zero.

- Junior Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) had one shot go wide and another blocked as neither team scored in the first overtime.

- Castle made two saves in the second OT to keep the match scoreless, and the Engineers looked primed to take the lead, but a shot from Rowlett sailed high and a shot from senior Stephanie Howe (Geneva, Ill.) was saved by Kamshad as the game would head into penalty kicks to decide a winner.

- Junior Lexi Spinetta (Austin, Texas) and Groff made the first two kicks for MIT, but the Engineers missed the last three as Williams converted on their final two opportunities to take the match in PKs, 3-2, and advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Williams held a slight edge in shots (17-14) and shots on goal (7-5). They also held a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks.
