Men's Cross Country

Men's Cross Country Captures Program's First NCAA National Championship!

 THE BASICS:

- Location: Lansing, Mich. (Forest Akers East Golf Course)

- The Lead: Leading from start to finish over the eight-kilometer course, the No. 2 ranked MIT men's cross country team made history on Saturday with a dominant 47-point victory over runner-up Wartburg to claim the program's first-ever NCAA Division III National Championship. The win also represents the first NCAA team championship by an MIT athletic team in school history.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- For the second-straight season, the Engineers tied a program record with five USTFCCCA All-Americans as senior Sam Acquaviva (Newburyport, Mass.) led the way with a third-place finish in a time of 24:42.1. Acquaviva's performance was highest individual finish ever by an MIT men's runner at the NCAA National Championship.

- Graduate student Ryan Wilson (Redwood City, Calif.) was right behind him in 24:54.2 as he closed strongly to place fifth overall. Senior Matthew Kearney (Austin, Texas) was next up for the Engineers in 14th place in a time of 25:17.3 as the top three were separated by 35 seconds.

- The final scoring runners for MIT came in back-to-back with junior Henry Hardart (Annapolis, Md.) placing 35th and senior Andrew Mah (Newton, Mass.) in 36th in a time of 25:34.8. Senior Vedang Lad (Plainsboro, N.J.) was the sixth Engineer in 43rd with a time of 25:39.3, followed by senior Lowell Hensgen (Raleigh, N.C.) in a time of 25:48.3 to finish 57th overall.

- Each of the top five Engineers were named as USTFCCCA All-Americans.
