Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

MIT Falls to Suffolk, 75-72, in Women’s Basketball

THE BASICS:

- Score: Suffolk University 75, MIT 72

- Records: MIT (1-4); Suffolk (4-1)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Rockwell Cage)

- The Lead: A layup by Maddie Stewart with 47 seconds remaining in regulation put Suffolk University ahead for good as it went on to defeat MIT, 75-72, in a non-conference women's basketball game on Monday night. Colby Guinta powered the Rams with a game-high 25 points while first-year Brianna Lebrun (Hartford, Conn.) led the Engineers with 20 points to go along with eight rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The first quarter saw four ties and four lead changes. Stewart gave Suffolk a 16-15 edge when she drained a free throw with one second remaining in the period.

- The Rams increased their lead to 22-17 after a jumper by Guinta with just under six minutes remaining in the second stanza. Sparked by a basket by graduate student Anna Broski (Stillman Valley, Ill.), MIT rattled off 10 unanswered points, capped by back-to-back three-pointers from sophomore Sarah Berman (York, Pa.). Guinta replied with back-to-back treys of her own, putting Suffolk in front, 28-27 with 3:03 on the clock. A pair of free throws from Lebrun kicked off a 10-4 run which resulted in a 37-32 lead for the Engineers at halftime.

- A put-back by Lebrun created MIT's largest margin two minutes into the third quarter, however, a layup from Amanda DeAngelis started a 10-2 burst which gave the Rams a 42-41 lead at the 4:07 mark. A three-point play by sophomore Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) put the Engineers back in front, but an exchange of baskets followed until a three-pointer from Stewart resulted in a 51-50 lead late in the frame.

- Stewart carried the momentum into the fourth quarter as her layup created some breathing room after 52 seconds elapsed. MIT responded with a layup by graduate student Paula Pieper (Greenville, S.C.) as the hosts went on to outscore Suffolk, 15-7, and establish a 65-60 lead with 4:58 left to play. The Rams went on to tie the game twice, but a free throw by sophomore Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) gave the Engineers a 69-68 edge with 1:09 remaining.

- During Suffolk's ensuing possession, Stewart sank the go-ahead layup while two free throws from both Stewart and DeAngelis moved the score to 74-69 with 12 seconds to go. Following an MIT timeout, Nwogu recorded another three-point play, however, Arlenis Veloz converted the second of her free-throw attempts to make the score 75-72 with 2.7 seconds left. During the Engineers' final possession, a three-pointer by Berman hit the back of the rim as time expired.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Nwogu finished with 18 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for the third double-double of her career. Berman posted 10 points as first-year Alice Hall (Ambler, Pa.) generated nine points and eight rebounds off the bench. Sophomore Grace Harrington (Seattle, Wash.) bolstered the defense with three steals.

- Stewart totaled 16 points while DeAngelis recorded 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Katie Kirsch hauled in nine rebounds as Veloz produced three assists and three steals.

- MIT led the way in rebounds (47-38), points in the paint (44-36), second-chance points (27-7), and bench scoring (11-8). Suffolk, meanwhile, had the upper hand in points off turnovers (18-14).

- The Engineers shot 37.7 percent (29-of-77) from the floor, 11.8 percent (2-of-17) from three-point range, and 66.7 percent (12-of-18) from the free throw line.

- The Rams shot 44.8 percent (26-of-58) from the floor, 50 percent (5-of-10) from behind the arc, and 78.3 percent (18-of-23) at the charity stripe.
