No. 12 Field Hockey Falls to No. 10 Babson in NEWMAC Final

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 10 Babson College 3, No. 12 MIT 1

- Records: No. 12 MIT (15-4); No. 10 Babson College (18-3)

- Location: Babson Park, Mass. (MacDowell Field)

- The Lead: On Saturday afternoon, No. 12 MIT field hockey dropped a 3-1 final to No. 10 ranked Babson College in the championship game of the 2022 NEWMAC Tournament. This was the sixth straight season that the Engineers have advanced to the conference title game and also the sixth consecutive tournament where MIT has faced off with the Beavers in one of the rounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Babson got on the board just 2:21 into the first quarter as Andrea Marguerite scored on a backhand shot that scooted just inside the right post for the 1-0 edge. The Beavers added to the lead at the 16:42 mark as Kelsey Low crossed the ball from the near corner to Brianne McGrath, who converted the shot from the right side for her 14th goal of the year and a 2-0 Babson advantage.

- The game remained that way until late in the third quarter where Caroline DiGiovanni's initial shot was saved, but she put home the rebound for the insurance goal and the 3-0 lead.

- The Engineers got on the board just 2:07 later when MIT was awarded a penalty stroke after the Babson goalie tied up the ball following a scrum in front of the net. First-year Bailey McIntyre (Concord, Mass.) took the penalty stroke and put the ball into the upper left corner for her fifth goal of the season and a 3-1 margin.

- MIT had seven penalty corner chances in the second half, including five in the third quarter alone, but was unable to come any closer as the Beavers claimed the team's second straight NEWMAC title with the 3-1 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Babson held a 13-9 advantage in shots, while MIT earned a 10-4 edge in penalty corner opportunities.

- Sophomore Anna Duncan (St. Louis, Mo.) had six stops for the Engineers in the loss, while Bayla Furmanek turned aside six shots in the win for Babson.
