Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) during the final eight seconds of overtime helped the MIT women's basketball team capture a 71-67 victory at Brandeis University on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore
Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) led all players with a career-high 25 points while grabbing a career-high 12 rebounds for the Engineers.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Brandeis jumped out to a 12-2 lead after three minutes elapsed, however, the game remained scoreless until a basket by the Judges at the 3:35 mark. Sophomore
Elise Harvey (Wayland, Mass.) ended MIT's scoring drought courtesy of a jumper with 35 seconds left in the opening frame.
Â
- Brandeis maintained its comfortable cushion for most of the second stanza as a 9-3 burst moved the score to 28-13 with 1:10 on the clock. Sparked by a layup from Choi, the Engineers went on an 8-2 run to enter halftime with an eight-point deficit (30-22).
Â
- MIT carried the momentum into the third quarter as it outscored the Judges, 13-3, and claimed a 35-33 lead at the 4:04 mark. Brandeis scored six points to go back in front, however, back-to-back three-pointers from graduate student
Paula Pieper (Greenville, S.C.) put the Engineers up, 41-39, with just under a minute remaining. The Judges then tied the game with a jumper during their next possession.
Â
- After a back-and-forth start to the fourth quarter, layups by Choi and Nwogu gave MIT a 47-43 edge at the 7:32 mark. During the next minute, Brandeis used two free throws and a three-pointer to go ahead. However, the Engineers rattled off six points, reclaiming the lead at 54-51 with 4:09 on the clock. MIT maintained its small margin until a three-pointer gave the Judges a 56-55 edge with 2:31 remaining. A layup by first-year
Brianna Lebrun (Hartford, Conn.) during the Engineers' next trip down the court was matched by Brandeis with 41.8 seconds remaining in regulation. Nwogu's free throw tied the game with 24.1 seconds left and after Lebrun corralled the rebound off the missed second attempt, MIT turned the ball over with 5.5 seconds to go. The Judges' attempt to capture the win at the buzzer was off the mark.
Â
- Pieper sank a layup right off the opening tip in overtime as a free throw by Nwogu gave the Engineers a 61-58 edge after 31 seconds elapsed. Brandeis drained a free throw a minute later and tied the game with a layup at the 2:51 mark. A jumper by Choi and then a layup from Nwogu with 56 seconds remaining created some breathing room. The Judges, however, went 3-of-4 at the charity stripe, coming within 65-64 with 19 seconds to go. Nwogu hit two free throws three seconds later, but Brandeis drained both of its attempts at the free throw line with 7.8 seconds left. Choi was immediately fouled and sank both shots, moving the score to 69-66. The Judges went back to the charity stripe with 4.1 seconds on the clock, but only made their first attempt. Choi then secured the victory with two free throws with 3.5 seconds remaining.
