MIT Falls to SUNY New Paltz in Four Sets

THE BASICS:

- Score: SUNY New Paltz - 3, MIT – 1 (25-21, 21-25, 29-27, 25-22)

- Records: MIT (9-4, 1-2 UVC), SUNY New Paltz (11-3, 2-0 UVC)

- Location: New Paltz, N.Y. (Hawk Center)

- The Lead: The MIT men's volleyball team dropped a tough four-set match on the road to SUNY New Paltz on Saturday afternoon. The match featured 55 ties and 21 lead changes.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Set 1: In a set that featured 19 lead changes, the two UVC teams went back-and-forth though out before the Hawks went on a five to one run to take the set by a score of 25-21.

- Set 2: Back-to-back aces from junior Jack Yurkanin (New Lenox, Ill.) put MIT up 13-7 but SUNY New Paltz began to chip away and got to within three to force an MIT timeout. The Engineers did not allow the Hawks to get any closer as they led wire-to-wire to take the second set 25-21.

- Set 3: A kill from first-year Grant Oh (Irvine, Calif.) followed by an ace from Yurkanin put the Engineers up 13-12, but the Hawks scored the next two to take a one-point lead. With New Paltz leading 23-22, back-to-back kills from Oh and Yurkanin gave the Engineers set point, but New Paltz tied it up and the two teams would go back-and-forth before two kills from the Hawks gave them the 29-27 set three win.

-  Set 4: With 20 ties and nine lead changes, the fourth set was a highly contested affair between the two UVC foes. After a New Paltz ace put them up 15-14, the Engineers got the next three points, highlighted by two kills from Oh to go up by two. The home team quickly scored three-straight points to take the lead, but a service error and another kill from Oh put MIT right back in front. From there the teams went back-and-forth before a 3-0 New Paltz run secured the 25-22 set win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-  Yurkanin led MIT with 19 kills and contributed seven digs while G. Oh finished with 16 kills and five digs.

- First-year Riley Oh (Irvine, Calif.) finished with 35 assists in the match.
