Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- The Pride took a 3-0 lead in the first inning as the visitors took advantage of four walks and a trio of wild pitches. MIT cut the margin down to 3-1 in the bottom of the first with two outs as sophomore
Michael Finch (Brentwood, Tenn.) drove in junior
Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) from third.
Â
- Springfield scored a pair of unearned runs in the second, followed by two runs for the Engineers in the bottom of the third as first-year
Malachi Soqui (Castaic, Calif.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and junior
Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) scored on a bases-loaded fielder's choice.
Â
- The game headed into the last two innings at 6-4 in favor of the Pride before the Engineers rallied to take their first lead. In the top of the eighth, MIT reliever
Saketh Gabbita (Ashburn, Va.) made a great play at the plate as he made a shoestring grab and threw out
Joe Penkala at the plate to keep it as a two-run game.
Â
- In the bottom of the inning, Soqui laced a two-RBI single to left to tie the game and senior
Nick Aiello (Freehold, N.J.) put MIT up with an RBI single to center that made it a 7-6 game. In a wild top of the ninth, first-year
James Moore (Los Gatos, Calif.) came on in relief of Gabbita and got two outs before
Noah Diamond doubled to right field to clear the bases to put the Pride back up 9-7.
Â
- In the bottom of the ninth,
Noah Bleakley struck out the side to secure the victory.
