Â
- Score: MIT 2, WPI 0
Â
- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Fran O'Brien Field)
Â
- The Lead: Led by a complete-game, 10-strikeout shutout by junior pitcher
Graham Cartwright (La Jolla, Calif.), the MIT baseball team defeated visiting WPI by a 2-0 final on Wednesday afternoon. The win gives the Cambridge Engineers a regular-season series sweep of WPI.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Both Cartwright and WPI starting pitcher
Everett Wonson were outstanding as the game was scoreless through the first three innings. MIT pushed across a two-out run in the bottom of the fourth as sophomore
Michael Finch (Brentwood, Tenn.) was hit by a pitch, followed by a single to center from junior
Erik Anderson (Palos Verdes, Calif.) and a bloop single to left by senior
Cory O'Shea (Glen Allen, Va.) that brought home Finch for the 1-0 lead.
Â
- The same situation nearly repeated itself in the bottom of the sixth as O'Shea placed a double just beyond the reach of WPI left fielder
Andrew Cash and Finch scored from second to extend the lead to 2-0.
Â
- The Worcester Engineers had a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs in the eighth before Cartwright induced a groundout to second by Cash to get out of the jam.
Â
-
Ryan Malkowski came on in relief for WPI in the eighth and set down MIT in order in his one inning of work. In the top of the ninth,
Jacob Hand led off the inning with a single to right center before Cartwright retired the next three batters to secure the shutout victory.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Cartwright scattered four hits over nine innings with three walks and a career-high 10 strikeouts. He is now 5-2 on the season for MIT and has won four straight starts.
Â
- Wonson took the loss for WPI and fell to 1-5 as he allowed six hits and two runs over seven innings of work with two walks and four strikeouts. Malowski threw a perfect eighth with one strikeout.
Â
- MIT outhit WPI by a slim 6-4 margin as O'Shea finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and Anderson was 2-for-3. In addition, Finch reached base three times and ended up 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk. Hand had a pair of WPI's four hits as he was 2-for-4 on the afternoon.
