MIT Defeats Wellesley, 22-3, on Senior Day

THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT 22, Wellesley College 3

- Records: MIT (11-4, 8-1 NEWMAC); Wellesley (4-11, 2-7 NEWMAC)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Jack Barry Field)

- The Lead: MIT gradually built a 6-0 lead before going on to defeat Wellesley College, 22-3, in the final NEWMAC women's lacrosse game of the regular season on Wednesday night. Junior Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) tallied seven goals and four assists, tying the program record for points in a game, and also collected eight draw controls. Eleanor Mallett powered the Blue with two goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Rabenold was a factor in MIT's first seven goals of the game. She connected on a pass from graduate student Joyce Noh (Los Angeles, Calif.) after 28 seconds elapsed and scored two minutes later. Rabenold then earned assists on two goals by junior Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) which sandwiched a goal by classmate Grace Ann Carlson (Daniel Island, S.C.). An unassisted blast by Rabenold gave the Engineers a 6-0 lead at the 5:25 mark.

- Wellesley ended the shutout over two minutes later courtesy of a free-position goal from Mallett. Rabenold corralled the ensuing draw and when directly to net, resulting in her fourth goal of the night. In a span of 46 seconds, first-year Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) and sophomore Makena Armstrong (San Diego, Calif.)  found the back of the net, giving MIT a 9-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

- Gambino and Noh scored early in the second stanza, however, the Blue's Izzy Burdick redirected a feed from Gabrielle Shell with 8:51 on the clock. Junior Emma Tauckus (Manhasset, N.Y.) converted her free-position attempt 21 seconds later as Rabenold and Pyon wrapped up the first-half scoring, increasing the Engineers' lead to 14-2.

- MIT controlled the action in the third quarter as it outscored Wellesley, 5-0.

- Mallett ended the Blue's scoring drought with a free-position goal five minutes into the fourth quarter. However, the Engineers replied with goals from first-year Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.), Gambino, and Lutz to close out the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Pyon totaled four goals, five draw controls, and two groundballs while Gambino finished with four goals and one assist. Noh contributed one goal and two assists as Lutz added four draw controls, one goal, and one assist. Junior Sophia DiSabato (San Francisco, Calif.) posted two groundballs and two caused turnovers while sophomore Katie Bell (Radnor, Pa.) chipped in two groundballs and one caused turnover.

- In net, senior Elena Boal (West Windsor, N.J.) collected 10 saves for MIT.

- Salome Greene amassed seven groundballs as Liz Sugg generated five groundballs and two caused turnovers for Wellesley. Julee Sharma led all players with four caused turnovers while Zoë Reynolds produced three draw controls.
