The Lead: The MIT softball team used a six-run sixth inning to extend its winning streak to 10 games with a come-from-behind win over No. 11 Tufts in game one of the doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, but the Jumbos then took the second game of the evening in a pitcher's duel by a score of 1-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Game One
- The Jumbos took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on an RBI double by
Rachel Moore.
Â
- MIT put up six runs in the top of the sixth, kick-started with a two-run single to center by first-year
Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Fla.). A Tufts throwing error on sophomore
Savannah Ashley's (Moses Lake, Wash.) fielder's choice gave MIT two more runs to make it a 4-0 lead. Junior
Jordan Sell's (Schwenksville, Pa.) bunt single scored first-year
Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) for the fifth MIT run and junior
Haley Samuelsen (Houston, Texas) came around to score the sixth MIT run on a fielder's choice by sophomore
Rylie Spiegel (Bradenton, Fla.).
Â
- The Jumbos put runners on the corners in the sixth, but senior
Anya Chase (Wells, Maine) induced a double-play ball to end the threat. She then retired Tufts in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win. Â
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Chase earned the complete-game win as she finished with seven strikeouts while allowing six hits and one walk.
- First-year
Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.) led MIT with three hits in the game, while Sell and sophomore
Mackenzie Relihan (Naperville, Ill.) each registered two hits in the game.
Â
- The Engineers out-hit the Jumbos 11-6.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED – Game Two
- Samuelsen and Sell led off the third with back-to-back singles and both moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Spiegel, but Jumbos pitcher
Sky Johnson got the next two outs without allowing a run to score.
Â
- Tufts could not get much offense against first-year
Becca O'Connor (San Antonio, Texas) until the sixth when a
Josie Steinberg double sent the game's first run across the plate. Johnson retired MIT in order in the seventh to secure the 1-0 win and snap the Engineers' 10-game winning streak.
 Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- First-year
Dana Bell (Bensalem, Pa.) led MIT with two hits in the game.
Â
- O'Connor went all six innings in the game allowing just one run, which was unearned. She surrendered five hits and struck out three.
UP NEXT:
- The Engineers are scheduled to return to the field on Friday, April 8 for a NEWMAC contest against Emerson. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Briggs Field. Â Â Â Â
