- The Lead: The MIT men's tennis team swept Baruch College, 5-0, on Wednesday afternoon in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Engineers took a 3-0 lead after doubles. First-year
Wayne Nelms (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomore
Sundeep Chakladar (Redondo Beach, Calif.) gave MIT its first win with an 8-2 win in No. 2 doubles. The win was the 14th victory for the pair as they have won their last 10 matches.
- In three doubles, first-years
Daniel Antov (Austin, Texas) and
Carl-Herman Grant (Oslo, Norway) defeated
Nicholas Santiago and
Piers Seidman 8-1. Junior
Derek Shen (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) and junior
Daniel Papacica (Carmel, Calif.) completed the doubles play with an 8-4 win in No. 1.
- Junior
Richter Jordaan (Denver, Colo.) took a 6-1, 6-0 win in No. 5 singles and first-year
Ryan Xiao (Cary, N.C.) sealed the win for MIT with a 6-1, 6-0 win in four singles.
UP NEXT:
- MIT returns to the court tomorrow, Friday, May 13 for a rematch against No. 22 RPI at 1 p.m. in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. RPI defeated MIT 7-2 earlier in the season.
