Anderson Leads Baseball Past Worcester State in 9-6 Final

THE BASICS:

- Records: MIT (15-21-1); Worcester State (17-16)

- Score: MIT 9, Worcester State 6

- Location: Worcester, Mass. (Rockwood Park)

- The Lead: Led by a 4-for-5 performance from junior Erik Anderson (Palos Verdes, Calif.), the MIT baseball team capped off the regular season with a 9-6 victory at Worcester State on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Anderson continued his hot streak with an RBI single in the first that scored sophomore Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.). That was followed by first-year Malachi Soqui (Castaic, Calif.) scoring on a wild pitch in the first and Anderson posted another RBI hit in the third for the 3-0 edge.

- The Lancers tied things up in the third with a trio of RBI hits, followed by a two-RBI double to left center by Alex Sorenti-Burns that led a three-run fifth to put Worcester State up 6-3. In the sixth, sophomore Kennan Gumbs (New York, N.Y.) singled to cut the margin to 6-4 and in the seventh, he put the Engineers in front on a bases-clearing triple that put MIT up 8-6. Sophomore Phillip Hood (Grapevine, Texas) doubled to right center to score an unearned run by Gumbs in the seventh to account for the 9-6 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- MIT outhit the Lancers 14-8 as five Engineers had multiple hits behind the four-hit performance from Anderson. On the mound, junior Matthew Nay (Roswell, Ga.) earned the win with one inning of hitless relief to move to 1-2 and first-year Ajinkya Gundaria (Alpharetta, Ga.) threw two scoreless innings for his second save of the year. Brett Bucklin was the losing pitcher and is now 1-3 overall in relief.
