Engineers Advance with 2-1 Win Over No. 2 Springfield

THE BASICS:

- Records: MIT (17-22-1); Springfield College (19-20)

- Score: No. 5 MIT 2, No. 2 Springfield College 1

- Location: Norton, Mass. (Sidell Stadium)

- The Lead: Led by three hits sophomore Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) and 7.2 innings of one-run baseball from starting pitcher Karl Meyer (Indianapolis, Ind.), No. 5 seeded MIT defeated No. 2 seeded Springfield College by a 2-1 final on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- In the second, junior Erik Anderson (Palos Verdes, Calif.) reached on an error to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a hit by pitch. He came around to score on the next at-bat as first-year Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) singled through the left side for the RBI and the 1-0 lead.

- The Engineers didn't waste any time adding an insurance run as they did so in the second to extend the margin to 2-0. Tubbs led off with a double to left center and scored as Schoenfeld singled up the middle for the RBI.

- Meyer kept the Pride off the scoreboard until the eighth inning and had set Springfield down in order on three occasions before the Pride cut into the lead. Michael Barrett led off the eighth with a single to left, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single through the left side by Noah Bleakley.

- With the bases loaded with two outs in the eighth, sophomore Saketh Gabbita (Ashburn, Va.) came on in relief of Meyer and struck out Andrew McCarty swinging to get MIT out of the jam. In the ninth, Gabbita allowed no hits and one walk and he secured the win and his second save of the season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Meyer moves to 2-0 on the season after scattering eight hits with one run, one walk and four strikeouts. Gabbita went 1.1 innings and allowed no hits with two strikeouts. Colby Welch dropped to 2-3 overall after allowed two runs and eight hits over 3.1 innings for Springfield.

- Offensively, Schoenfeld was the leader with his three hits but also finished with three stolen bases on the day. In addition, sophomore Michael Finch (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Tubbs each finished with two hits.

- Bleakley and Jack Cooney each posted two hits for the Pride as MIT owned an 11-8 edge in total hits.

- MIT continues on in the double-elimination tournament and will now face No. 3 seeded Babson College at Wheaton College beginning at 11 a.m. on Sunday morning in the first game of day four of the NEWMAC Tournament.
