THE BASICS:
Â
- Score: Salve Regina 13, MIT 10
Â
- Records: MIT (1-1); Salve Regina (2-0)
Â
- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium)
Â
- The Lead: In the home opener on Saturday afternoon, the MIT football team dropped a 13-10 final to Salve Regina University as the Seahawks used a 91-yard scoring drive late in the fourth to come away with the victory.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- After a scoreless first quarter and most of the second, the Engineers got on the board just 13 seconds before halftime for the 7-0 lead. On a second down pass by Salve's
Jack Maguire, MIT first-year
Chase Williams (Missoula, Mont.) tipped the ball into the hands of teammate
Donald Stralkus (North Brunswick, N.J.) and Stralkus took it 55 yards up the near sideline to the Salve 10-yard line.
Â
- On the next play, senior
Oakley Dehning (Longmont, Colo.) found first-year
Collin Vollmer (Cleveland, Ohio) in the corner of the end zone for the 10-yard TD.
Â
- In the final seconds of the third quarter, the Seahawks used a big play of their own to tie the game up at 7-7. On first down, Salve quarterback
Jake Stack hit
Keith Sutton with a pass near midfield and Sutton did the rest as he outran the MIT defense for the tying score.
Â
- The Engineers went back in front with 9:05 remaining in the fourth when sophomore
Nico Bulhof (Bryan, Texas) blasted through a 32-yard field for the 10-7 edge for the hosts as that capped a 14-play, 53-yard drive.
Â
- The score remained that way until the final moments where the Seahawks put together the game-winning drive. After a Bulhof punt pinned the visitors at the nine-yard line with two minutes left, Stack completed a number of passes to get things going and moved down to the MIT 19-yard line on a 33-yard completion to
Josh Letellier.
Â
- The Seahawks took advantage of a defensive pass interference penalty to get down to the four-yard line and on third down, Stack connected again with Letellier for the 13-10 edge. The extra point attempt was blocked by MIT graduate student
Paul Calvetti (Ridgewood, N.J.) and the score remained just a three-point game. Salve Regina clinched the win on the next possession as
Jack Zingaro picked off Dehning to seal the victory.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
