Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Suffers 1-0 Setback to Roger Williams

THE BASICS:

- Score: Roger Williams - 1, MIT - 0

- Records: MIT (1-4), Roger Williams (3-0-1)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field)

- The Lead: With just under 10 minutes remaining in the match, Javi Beltran broke a highly contested scoreless tie to lift Roger Williams over the MIT men's soccer team on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Both teams had numerous scoring chances in the first 45 minutes of action. Senior Will Seiple (Boulder, Colo.), junior Garrett Robinson (Winfield, Ill.), and graduate student Kaleb Blake (Los Angeles, Calif.) all had excellent opportunities to put the Engineers in the lead, but their shots did not find the back of the net.

- The pace intensified in the second half with the teams exchanging scoring chances. Shortly after a shot by senior Alex Weiler (Portland, Ore.) was blocked, the Hawks corralled the rebound, and Beltran took the ball past the Engineers' defense and fired a shot in the far corner at 80:24 to break the scoring drought.

- Seiple put back-to-back shots high, and MIT had what appeared to be the game-tying score, but the goal did not count as the Engineers were called offsides.

- Junior Aidan Hallinan (Carlsbad, Calif.) took a shot on cage with five minutes remaining but Jack Avellar made the save to preserve the 1-0 shutout.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- MIT held a 19-16 advantage in shots and shots on goal (7-5).

- Avellar got his first win in net for RWU as he made seven saves. Senior Paarth Desai (Lawrenceville, Ga.) fell to 0-2 and made four saves in goal.

UP NEXT:

- The Engineers open up NEWMAC play on Saturday, September 17 at Clark. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
