Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

A Late Layup by Delgado-Gonzalez Gives Engineers a 70-68 Road Win Over Coast Guard

THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT 70, U.S. Coast Guard Academy 68

- Records: MIT (3-9, 1-2 NEWMAC); U.S. Coast Guard Academy (3-11, 1-2 NEWMAC)

- Location: New London, Conn. (Roland Hall)

- The Lead: With eight seconds remaining in regulation and the score tied at 68, sophomore Spencer Lin (Menlo Park, Calif.) found first-year Rome Delgado-Gonzalez (Miami, Fla.) under the basket for the game-winning layup as the MIT men's basketball team earned a hard-fought 70-68 NEWMAC road contest against the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday. Four Engineers scored in double-digits led by sophomore Kade Killeen (Austin, Texas) with 25. The Bears Declan Rooney led all scorers with 26 points on the evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT opened the game on a 10-0 run but the Bears got to within four on a Cameron Brown jumper at 15:01. The Bears tied the game at 12 on a three-pointer from Rooney, but Lin put the Engineers back on top with a three at 13:09. Coast Guard took a three-point lead on a Mitch Shettles shot from long range, but a layup with 53 seconds remaining by Delgado-Gonzalez cut Bears' lead to one at 40-39.

- Back-to-back jumpers by Delgado-Gonzalez to open the second half gave MIT a 43-40 lead. Trailing by four with 2:24 left, first-year Tim Minicozzi (Belmont, Mass.) converted on a layup to get MIT to within two, and Lin tied the game with a layup of his own with just over a minute left. Killeen blocked a Rooney layup attempt and junior Micah Boone (Pike Road, Ala.) corralled the rebound to set up the Engineers for a last-second shot. With eight seconds left, Lin found Delgado-Gonzalez in the paint for the score to give MIT a two-point lead. Trevor Parks put up a last-chance three that missed, and the Engineers prevented a follow-up chance and held on for the thrilling road victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Killeen finished the game with a double-double as he grabbed 11 rebounds to go with his 25 points. Delgado-Gonzalez finished with 18 points, Lin added 11, and Boone scored 10. Lin also contributed a team-high nine assists during the game.

- Rooney went 11-17 from the floor for the Bears as he was the only Coast Guard player to score in double figures. Luke Farrell led the team with 12 rebounds and Shettles put up a team-best five assists.

- The Engineers shot 46.8% in the game and 50% in the second half and held the Bears to a 38.2% shooting night.
