Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- On the first drive of the game, MIT converted three straight first downs behind the running of senior
Brady Klein (Washington, Ill.) as he quickly moved the Engineers into USMMA territory. After picking up another first down on a USMMA penalty, sophomore
Chase Harmon (West Linn, Ore.) converted a fourth down and nine to move MIT to the 10-yard line. On third down, graduate student
Theo Dawson (Jackson, Wyoming) got the visitors on the scoreboard as he scored off the right side from four yards out to make it 7-0 with 8:48 left in the first.
Â
- The Mariners answered on the next drive as Gonzalez scored on a toss sweep to the left side from five yards out, knotting the score at 7-7 with 4:57 left in the first. Gonzalez put the hosts in front at the 12:05 mark of the second when he found the end zone from 11 yards to cap a 67-yard drive for the 14-7 lead.
Â
- After the two teams traded interceptions in the second quarter, Gonzalez scored for the final time as his one-yard TD run made it a 21-7 USMMA lead at the half.
Â
-
Talsen Smith directed the Mariners on a 10-play, 72-yard drive over a span of 4:16 in the third, capped by a 12-yard TD pass to
Gervy Alota to make it 28-7 heading to the fourth. MIT closed out the scoring with 9:40 remaining in the game when Dawson scored up the middle from one yard out on third down to account for the 28-14 final and his second touchdown of the day.
