Men's Soccer Defeated by WPI, 2-0

THE BASICS:
 
- Score: WPI - 2, MIT - 0
 
- Records: MIT (6-6-2, 4-2-1 NEWMAC), WPI (8-3-6, 6-1-1 NEWMAC)
 
- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field)
 
- The Lead: The MIT men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to WPI on Roberts Field on Wednesday afternoon in NEWMAC play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Francesco Valagussa got a pass from Franco Bazzini in front of the goal and waited out his defender before making a move and placing a shot into the back of the net at 23:36 to give WPI the lead.
 
- First-year Nico Mangiafico (Farmington, Conn.) looked to tie the match a few minutes later, but Ryan Martin made a diving save to keep the visitors in the lead.
 
- Early in the second half, Luke Savoie gave WPI a 2-0 lead when he got a rebound off a Valagussa shot for the score at 46:02.
 
- Martin made saves on shots from first-year Dilin Meloni (Needham, Mass.) and senior Garrett Robinson (Winfield, Ill.) to keep MIT off the board and secure the 2-0 for WPI.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- MIT held a 12-11 advantage in shots, but WPI held a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. MIT also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
 
- Martin made five saves in goal for WPI to improve to 7-1-3.
 
- First-year Hernando Ardila (Miramar, Fla.) got the start in goal and finished with one save in 54 minutes of action and fell to 3-2 on the season. Paolo Mangiafico (Farmington, Conn.) made four saves in almost 36 minutes of play.

- The Engineers will wrap up their regular season with a 5 p.m. home contest against Wheaton on Saturday, October 28. Before the match, MIT will be honoring its graduating class.
