No. 14 Women's Soccer Falls in NCAA Third Round to John Carroll, 1-0

THE BASICS:

- The Lead: The No. 14 MIT women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to John Carroll in the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Engineers put together another incredible season as they captured the program's seventh NEWMAC Tournament Championship and fell one win short of tying the program record for wins in a season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Senior Lexi Spinetta (Austin, Texas) and junior Mia Sedgwick (Wilmette, Ill.) hoped to put MIT up within the first 10 minutes of action, but Madeline Martin Kosier made both saves to keep the game scoreless.

- At the 28:35 mark, Martin Kosier turned away a penalty kick from junior Natalie Barnouw (Los Angeles, Calif.) to keep the match tied at zero.

- The Blue Streaks broke the scoreless game at the free kick shot from Meredith Coloain trickled off the hands of a diving Morgan Everett (Danville, Pa.) into the back of the net at 56:16.

- Graduate student Kaitlin Zareno (Los Angeles, Calif.) had a chance to tie the match, but her shot at 83:35 was saved as JCU held on for the 1-0 win to advance to the Elite Eight tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Messiah.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- This was the first meeting between the two programs.

- Everett ended the season with an 18-4-1 record as she made three saves.

- Martin Kosier turned away all 11 shots she faced to improve to 16-1-5.

- The Engineers held the advantage in shots (29-7) and shots on target (12-4).
