- The Lead: The MIT men's swimming and diving team won four of five events on day two of the 2023 NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championships to jump into first place overall and take a 178-point lead over second-place Coast Guard.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:

200-Yard Free Relay
- The Engineers took first in the event as the team of senior Adam Janicki (Falls Church, Va.), junior Tobe Obochi (Highland Park, Ill.), first-year Evan Liu (Woodbury, N.Y.) and senior Trent Piercy (Austin, Texas) dropped almost a second off their prelim time (1:21.87) to capture the event with a mark of 1:20.10.
- The time currently ranks as the third fastest time in Division III, trailing only Kenyon (1:19.21) and Calvin (1:19.44).
- MIT hit an NCAA B Cut in the event and the time is almost a full second faster than last year's invited time.
- Janicki and Obochi are now two-time winners in the event.

500-Free
- First-year Cole Firlie (Sarasota, Fla.) recorded an NCAA B cut time of 4:29.58 in his second-place performance. His time clocked in faster than last year's invited time.
- Junior Brian Li (Allen, Texas) touched the wall in fourth with a time of 4:37.67 followed by first-year Eugene Jiang (Baton Rouge, La.) with a mark of 4:38.26.

200-IM
- The Engineers took the top two spots led by junior Jaden Luo (Austin, Texas) who clocked in with an NCAA B cut and NEWMAC Meet record time of 1:48.17. Sophomore Roderick Huang (Cupertino, Calif.) also hit an NCAA B cut with his time of 1:50.15.
- Junior Aaron Zhu (Chelmsford, Mass.) finished fifth with a time of 1:52.62.

50-Free
- Obochi won the event with a time of 20.39 after he swam a 20.22 in the prelims which is faster than last year's invited time. His finals time is also an NCAA B Cut mark.
- Janicki earned a second-place finish (20.76) followed by Piercy in third (20.94).
- Obochi won the event for the second-straight year.

400-Medley Relay
- The Engineers bested the 2022 Invited time with their winning time of 3:14.13. The team of Janicki, sophomore Jacob McCarran (Pittsburgh, Pa.), first-year Michael Peng (College Station, Texas) and Obochi finished almost six seconds ahead of the team from Coast Guard.
- This is the third title in the event for Janicki and second for Obochi.

- Tomorrow begins day three of the 2023 NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championships with the prelims at 10 a.m. and the finals at 6 p.m. The events scheduled are: 400-IM, 100-Fly, 200-Free, 100-Breast, 100-Back, 3-Meter diving and the 200-Medley relay. Â
