Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Falls to No. 11/12 Babson, 77-66, in NEWMAC Semifinals

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 11/12 Babson College 77, MIT 66

- Records: MIT (17-10); Babson (23-4)

- Location: Babson Park, Mass. (Staake Gymnasium)

- The Lead: A 13-4 run by No. 2 seeded and nationally-ranked No. 11/12 Babson College in the fourth quarter helped it pull away for a 77-66 victory over No. 3 seed MIT in the semifinals of the NEWMAC Women's Basketball Tournament on Friday night. Sophomore Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) led all players with 21 points while also grabbing 11 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT jumped out to 13-5 lead following a three-pointer by sophomore Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) midway through the opening quarter. A defensive battle ensued until Babson hit a jumper with 2:51 left, setting off an exchange of baskets which made the score 15-9 at the end of the quarter.

- Graduate student Paula Pieper (Greenville, S.C.) opened the second quarter with a jumper, but the Beavers quickly replied with one of their own, sparking an 11-1 run that resulted in a 20-18 lead with 4:41 on the clock. Choi drained a three-pointer 30 seconds later and then both teams traded baskets until two free throws by Choi and a jumper by sophomore Sarah Berman (York, Pa.) gave the Engineers a 27-24 edge with 2:48 remaining. The back-and-forth scoring resumed but back-to-back layups put the Beavers in front, 30-29, with 33 seconds remaining. First year Alice Hall (Ambler, Pa.) tied the game with a free throw with eight ticks left before halftime.

- Holding 35-34 lead early in the third quarter, Babson rattled off eight unanswered points before going on to establish a 51-39 advantage with 2:38 on the clock. MIT chipped away courtesy of a 7-of-8 performance at the free throw line but the Beavers buried a three-pointer to make the score 54-46 at the end of the frame.

- The Engineers opened the fourth quarter with a 7-2 run as Hall recorded a pair of layups and Choi knocked down a trey, bringing the visitors within three at the 7:44 mark. Babson replied with a 13-4 run which increased its advantage to 69-57 with 4:26 remaining. The score remained unchanged until Choi hit another three with 2:41 to go. MIT wouldn't get any closer as the Beavers outscored the Engineers, 8-6, down the stretch with Nwogu accounting for all six points.
