Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- After a pair of scoreless innings to open the game, junior
Kennan Gumbs (New York, N.Y.) reached on a one-out walk and stole second before coming home on a deep two-run homer to left from first-year
Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) that gave MIT the 2-0 lead. The Engineers added an unearned run in the third as senior
Graham Cartwright (La Jolla, Calif.) reached on an error and eventually scored on an RBI single to left from first-year
Eitan Moore (Jerusalem, Israel).
Â
- The Engineers continued to build the lead in the top of the fifth with another pair of runs as senior
Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) and junior
Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) crossed the plate to make it 5-0.
Â
- UMass Boston got on the board in the bottom of the sixth as they put up three hits and scored a pair to make it a 5-2 game.
Aidan Blake tripled to center to score
Luke Leavitt for the first run, followed by a double to right by
Craig Corliss that plated Blake. MIT starter
Brian Rapanan (Gurnee, Ill.) got a groundout to third and a strikeout swinging to get out of the jam as he scattered six hits over six innings with six strikeouts.
Â
- The Beacons pulled to within 5-3 in the seventh when
Nick Farnacci scored on a wild pitch, but the Engineers again answered when Schoenfeld launch a one-out, two-run homer to right to score
Zev Moore and make the score 7-3 MIT.
Â
- In the ninth, UMass Boston took advantage of a number of MIT walks and put together a five-run frame as the Beacons completed the rally when
Mariano Jimenez came home to tie the game and Blake scored on a wild pitch for the 8-7 final.
