MIT Defeats UMass Boston, 21-13; Gebhardt Reaches Career Milestones

THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT 21, UMass Boston 10

- Records: MIT (1-1); UMass Boston (1-1)

- Location: Boston, Mass. (James Cotter Field at Boston College High School)

- The Lead: MIT outscored UMass Boston, 16-3, in the first half before going on to capture a 21-10 victory in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Thursday night. Graduate student Ryan Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) produced seven goals and three assists, resulting in him recording his 100th goal with the Engineers and the 400th point of his career.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT rattled off six unanswered goals before establishing a 9-1 lead at the end of the quarter. First year Oscar Lindenthal (Vero Beach, Calif.) connected on a pass from sophomore Heath Nilsen (Carlsbad, Calif.) after 1:46 elapsed. Gebhardt recorded three of the Engineers' next four goals, but UMass Boston ended the shutout with 5:54 left in the quarter. Quick strikes by first year Zach Bleil (New Canaan, Conn.) and sophomore Dylan Nelson (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) increased MIT's cushion while Nilsen redirected a feed from Lindenthal for the final goal of the frame.

- The Engineers continued to cruise in the second quarter as their advantage grew to 16-3. Junior Bennett Stankovits (Rumson, N.J.) scored the first two goals with Gebhardt earning an assist. A solo effort by first year Braedon Rudolph (Denver, Colo.) moved the score to 12-1 at the 8:58 mark. The Beacons ended their scoring drought 26 seconds later, but Gebhardt buried a man-up goal, resulting in the 100th goal of his MIT career. Junior Jack McCordic (Medfield, Mass.) added another man-up goal which was followed by an unassisted strike by Nilsen. UMass Boston found the back of the net with 2:37 remaining, however, Gebhardt buried an extra-man goal for the 400th point of his career.

- The Beacons opened the third quarter with three straight goals as they went on to outscore the Engineers, 7-3, and make the score 19-10 at the end of the frame. Gebhardt scored a man-down goal on a pass from sophomore Patrick Timons (Woodside, Calif.) midway through the period and after a UMass Boston man-up goal, senior Tory Lentine (Flemington, N.J.) found McCordic with 5:53 on the clock. Over a minute later, Stankovits redirected a pass from Gebhardt. The Beacons closed out the quarter with three goals in a row.

- Strikes by Nelson and Nilsen early in the fourth quarter gave the visitors a 21-10 advantage. UMass Boston, however, recorded the final three goals of the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Nilsen finished with four goals and one assist as Stankovits recorded a hat trick. Lindenthal contributed one goal and two assists while sophomore Matthew Sardis (Bernardsville, N.J.) was 12-of-26 in faceoffs. Senior Chris Perrino (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Sardis both collected five groundballs as Bleil posted two caused turnovers. In net, senior Devin McCabe (New Castle, N.H.) made nine saves.

- With 403 career points, Gebhardt currently ranks fifth in Division III and seventh across all NCAA divisions. At MIT, he's tied for sixth all-time in career goals (102) and ranks 14th in career points (131). Last season, Gebhardt set the NCAA career goals record across all divisions with 300 goals.
