MIT Sailing Post Strong Finishes Over the Weekend

The Lead: The MIT sailing team took to the water to compete in three regattas over the weekend in some challenging weather conditions. The Engineers posted a top-five finish in the Duplin Women's Team Race and posted strong finishes in their other two regattas.
 
FRIIS TROPHY | Bristol, R.I. | 7th of 9
 
- The Engineers posted a 5-11 record during the two-day regatta hosted by Roger Williams University. MIT finished round one with a 2-6 record and went 3-5 in round two.
 
- MIT took wins over Boston College and Tufts in round one and defeated Bowdoin, Brown, and Tufts in round two.
 
-  Junior Maks Groom (Seattle, Wash.), sophomore Julius Heitkoetter (Austin, Texas), and junior Sam Bruce (Severna Park, Md.) skippered the MIT boat while senior Wendy Wu (Andover, Mass.), sophomore Nicholas Abate (Kemha, Texas), senior Abby VanLonkhuyzen (Yarmouth, Maine), junior Jemma Schroder (Menlo Park, Calif.), graduate student Maaya Prasad (Yorktown, Va.) and first year Alex Horne (Broomfield, Colo.) were the crew.

DUPLIN WOMEN'S TEAM RACE | Medford, Mass. | 5th of 10
 
- The MIT team finished fifth with an 8-6 record. The Engineers opened the competition with a 6-3 record in round one and wrapped up with a 2-3 record against the top six on Sunday.
 
- Sophomore Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.), graduate student Dana Haig (Beach Haven, N.J.), sophomore Lucy Brock (Austin, Texas), and senior Emily Scherer (Oshkosh, Wis.) were the skippers for MIT with sophomore Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.), sophomore Mercedes Escandon (Brick, N.J.), sophomore Shayne Bersin (Port Washington, N.Y.), and senior Grace Mao (Overland Park, Kan.) on the crew.
 
TEAM RACE INVITE | Cambridge, Mass. | 6th of 8
 
- MIT finished sixth after a tiebreaker with the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The Engineers finished with a 7-10 record over the weekend.
 
- The Engineers put up a 3-4 record in round one and 4-3 in the second round. In the silver round, the Engineers went 0-3.
 
- Junior Matthew Elliot (Waterford, Mich.), sophomore Max Katz-Christy (Cambridge, Mass.), and first year Brooke Barry (West Hartford, Conn.) were the skippers with sophomore Yitan Zhu (Katy, Texas), senior Soleh Anderlini (Washington, D.C.), and senior Sarah Aaronson (Ashland, Ore.) on the crew.

- Next weekend the Engineers will host the Marchiando Trophy from April 1-2 and will also compete at the Dellenbaugh Team Race and the BU Trophy.
