Softball Blasts Six Homers in Doubleheader Sweep of Haverford

THE BASICS:

- The Lead: The MIT softball team hit six home runs and tallied 26 hits and 21 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Haverford on the road on Tuesday afternoon. The Engineers tied the program record for homers in a game with three in the first game and three in the second. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. GAME ONE:
 
- Sophomore Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.) led off the game with a homer to center, and three batters later, classmate Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) launched a three-run shot to center to give MIT a 4-0 lead.
 
- Senior Haley Samuelsen (Houston, Texas) hit the third MIT homer of the game with her shot to left to lead off the second. The Fords responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI groundout to make it a 5-1 game.
 
- A five-run fifth put the Engineers up nine. Adkison doubled home two runs while senior Abby Shull (Cypress, Texas), first year Olivia Scarpaci (Staten Island, N.Y.), and junior Malia Smith (Boise, Idaho) also recorded RBI in the inning.
 
- The Fords got two runs back in the bottom of the inning on a two-out single but first year Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) got Sarah Fan looking to end the inning. 
 
- Adkison knocked in her fourth run of the game as her RBI single in the seventh put MIT up 11-3. After a lead-off single in the bottom of the frame, Langmeyer got the next three to secure the 11-3 win.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
 
- The three home runs tied the program record for most in a game. The Engineers had hit three in a game on two other occasions.
 
- Adkison finished 3-4 with four RBI and a run scored and Bivin went 1-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
 
- Langmeyer recorded the complete game win to improve to 5-0 on the year. She allowed three runs on six hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts.
 
- Alexa Finkele took the loss for the Fords to move to 2-2 on the year. She tossed five innings and allowed 10 runs (eight earned) on 11 hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. GAME TWO:
 
- Haverford took a 3-0 lead in the second, but MIT responded with four runs in the top of the third. Senior Jordan Sell (Schwenksville, Pa.) got the scoring started with an RBI single, and Scarpaci plated two with her homer to center. Bivin followed with her second homer of the day to make it a 4-3 MIT lead.
 
- Three more runs in the fourth on RBI from first year Ava Ladd (Austin, Texas), Adkison and Sell put MIT up 7-3 and Scarpaci and Bivin made it a 9-3 game with RBI in the sixth.
 
- First year Kara Hines (Cynthiana, Ky.) hit the third Engineer homer of the day in the seventh to make it a 10-3 game as the Engineers held Haverford scoreless in the bottom of the inning for the win.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
 
- MIT tied the program record for homers in a game with three as the Engineers also hit three in game one.
 
- Bivin finished 2-4 with two RBI. She is batting .417 with three home runs and 21 RBI.
 
- Scarpaci led MIT with three RBI as she went 2-4 with two runs scored.
 
- Graduate student Deb Torres (Portage, Mich.) got her second win in the circle as she threw 5.2 innings on one-hit ball. She struck out one and walked none.  
 
- The Engineers had five players record two hits in the game as they outhit the Fords 13-3.
 
- Rachel McQueen took the loss for Haverford as she allowed seven runs (five earned) in 3.2 innings of work.
 
UP NEXT:
 
- The Engineers will conclude their Spring Break trip with a doubleheader against Stockton University, tomorrow, March 29. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
