MIT Sailing Competes in Three Races Over the Weekend

The Lead: The MIT sailing team competed in three regattas over the weekend and posted a weekend best fourth-place finish at the Women's Team Race Championship at Yale.

OPEN NEW ENGLAND TEAM RACE CHAMPIONSHIPS | Providence, R.I. | 9th of 12
 
- The Engineers finished with a 3-2 record and fell to Brown in a sail off to finish ninth overall.
 
- Junior Sam Bruce (Severna Park, Md.), junior Maks Groom (Seattle, Wash.) and sophomore Julius Heitkoetter (Austin, Texas) handled the skipper duties while sophomore Nicholas Abate (Kemah, Texas), graduate student Maaya Prasad (Yorktown, Va.), senior Wendy Wu (Andover, Mass.), junior Jemma Schroder (Menlo Park, Calif.), and senior Abby VanLonkhuyzen (Yarmouth, Maine) were on the crew.

- The Engineers tallied 144 points in the A Division and 202 points in the B Division.
 
- MIT recorded seven top-10 finishes during the two-day event.
 
- The A Division boat was steered by first year Brooke Barry (West Hartford, Conn.) and senior Soleh Anderlini (Washington, D.C.) and the B Division boat featured sophomore Yitan Zhu (Katy, Texas) and senior Sarah Aaronson (Ashland, Ore.).
 
YALE WOMEN'S TEAM RACE | New Haven, Conn. | 4th of 8
 
- A 9-5 record helped the Engineers to a fourth-place finish at the race. MIT went 4-3 in round one and finished strong with a 5-2 record in round two.
 
- Sophomore Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.), graduate student Dana Haig (Beach Haven, N.J.), sophomore Lucy Brock (Austin, Texas), and senior Emily Scherer (Oshkosh, Wis.) were the skippers over the weekend with sophomore Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.), sophomore Mercedes Escandon (Brick, N.J.), sophomore Shayne Bersin (Port Washington, N.Y.), senior Grace Mao (Overland Park, Kan.), Scherer and graduate student Zoe Fisher (River Forest, Ill.) on the crew.

- The Engineers are back with three regattas on the slate next week. MIT is scheduled to host the Oberg Fleet Race and compete in the Thompson Trophy and the Women's New England Team Race Championships.
