THE BASICS:

- Records: MIT (9-12, 4-3 NEWMAC); No. 18 Wheaton College (21-4, 7-0 NEWMAC)

- Score: No. 18 Wheaton College 10, MIT 3

- The Lead: In the opening game of a three-game series on Friday afternoon, the MIT baseball team fell to No. 18 Wheaton College by a 10-3 final at Sidell Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Lyons got on the board first with single runs in the first and second innings as Wheaton held a 2-0 lead. The hosts doubled that lead to 4-0 on RBI singles to center from Nick Croteau and Cavan Brady in the fourth before MIT got on the board in the top of the sixth.

- In the sixth, senior Graham Cartwright (La Jolla, Calif.) led off with a single to center and moved into scoring position after stealing second. Junior Kennan Gumbs (New York, N.Y.) doubled down the left field line with one out to score Cartwright, while Gumbs eventually came home on a sacrifice fly to center by junior Phillip Hood (Grapevine, Texas) to cut the lead in half at 4-2.

- Wheaton put up a four-run sixth inning behind five hits while also taking advantage of one MIT error in the frame. Back-to-back RBI singles through the left side are the hits that made it an 8-2 game before senior Ben Burke (Chelmsford, Mass.) struck out the last two batters swinging to get out of the jam.

- After the Lyons scored two more in the seventh for the 10-2 advantage, the Engineers put up their third run of the game in the eighth as senior Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) reached on a leadoff error and scored on a groundout later in the inning.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Cartwright was one of two Engineers with multiple hits on the day as he finished the game 3-for-4 with one run scored. Brady was the offensive leader for the Lyons as he was also 3-for-4 while also driving in four runs.

- Junior Karl Meyer (Indianapolis, Ind.) took the loss for MIT to fall to 2-2 on the season. Over 5.1 innings, he scattered 11 hits with seven runs allowed (five earned) with three strikeouts. Ryan McCarroll got the start and the win for Wheaton as he is now 6-1 on the year. Over six innings, he allowed eight hits and two runs with no walks and 11 strikeouts.
