No. 25 Softball Outscores Springfield 18-0 in Doubleheader Sweep

- The Lead: The No. 25 MIT softball team outscored Springfield 18-0 in a decisive road doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon. The wins give the Engineers sole possession of the top spot in the NEWMAC.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. GAME ONE:

- Sophomore Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) knocked in the first two runs of the game with an RBI double to center in the first and came around to score on a double from sophomore Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.) to make it a 3-0 lead.
 
- Adkison made it 4-0 with an RBI single in the third, and seniors Haley Samuelsen (Houston, Texas) and Jordan Sell (Schwenksville, Pa.) extended the MIT advantage to six with RBI singles in the fourth.
 
- Sell and Bivin doubled home runs in the seventh, and Adkison knocked in her third run of the day to make it 9-0. Junior Rylie Spiegel (Rumson, N.J.) plated the final Engineer run of the day with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
 
-  First year Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) tossed her sixth complete game shutout as she allowed seven hits and one walk and struck out five to improve to 13-2 this season. She lowered her ERA to 1.13 and has 99 strikeouts this season.
 
- Adkison finished 4-4 with three RBI and a run scored while Sell and first year Ava Ladd (Austin, Texas) recorded three hits each as the Engineers out-hit the Pride 17-7.
 
- Bivin added three RBI in the game as she finished 2-4 with two runs scored.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. GAME TWO:
 
- MIT jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first two innings of play. Ladd doubled home the first run, and junior Mackenzie Relihan (Naperville, Ill.) knocked in two more runs with a double to center.
 
- Bivin doubled home the fourth MIT run in the second, and junior Katia Pendowski (Elk Grove, Ill.) worked a bases-loaded walk to make it a five-run lead. Speigel then singled home the sixth and seventh runs for MIT.
 
- Relihan singled home Bivin in the sixth for the final run of the day.
 
- Sophomore Becca O'Connor (San Antonio, Texas) handled the Pride as she allowed just three runners to reach base in her six innings of work.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
 
- Bivin's RBI tied the program record of 40 in a single season. She currently leads the NEWMAC in RBI and ranks fifth with a .424 batting average as she went 3-4 with two runs scored.
 
- O'Connor twirled a three-hit shutout to move to 7-0 on the season. She struck out three batters in the game and lowered her ERA to 2.63. She has walked just six batters this season in 53.1 innings pitched.
 
- Relihan went 3-3 at the dish with three RBI and a run scored.
 
UP NEXT:
 
- The Engineers will play another road doubleheader as they will travel to Beverly, Mass. on Tuesday, April 18 to take on Endicott. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
