The Lead: After a back-and-forth start, Williams College put together a 10-2 run over the course of the second and third quarters, helping it pull away for a 16-8 victory over MIT in a non-conference men's lacrosse game on Tuesday night. First year
Zach Bleil (New Canaan, Conn.) paced the Engineers with three goals.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Williams opened the scoring after four minutes elapsed then Bleil registered the equalizer over a minute later. Sophomore
Dylan Nelson (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) gave MIT the lead, but the Ephs evened the score at two courtesy of a man-up goal with 6:20 left in the quarter.
Â
- Williams generated three unanswered goals, resulting in a 5-2 advantage at the 6:45 mark of the second quarter. Less than a minute later, graduate student
Ryan Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) redirected a feed from first year
Bryce Metalios (Riverside, Conn.) to keep MIT within striking distance. The Ephs replied with three goals in a span of 2:11, establishing an 8-3 lead heading into halftime.
Â
- The hosts produced three more goals before senior
Teddy Corcoran (Harrison, N.Y.) connected on a pass from junior
Heath Nilsen (Carlsbad, Calif.) with 5:59 on the clock. Williams tacked on another goal, moving the score to 12-4 at the end of the third quarter.
Â
- Just 35 seconds into the fourth quarter, Bleil scored on a feed from Nilsen. The Ephs quickly found the back of the net, however, Bleil completed the hat trick at the 10:34 mark. The score remained unchanged until Williams recorded another three-goal burst, increasing its margin to 16-6 with three minutes remaining. Shortly after the ensuing faceoff, senior
Tory Lentine (Flemington, N.J.) set up Metalios. The Engineers capped the scoring on an unassisted goal by Gebhardt with 31 seconds left to play.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Nilsen finished with two assists while Gebhardt posted two goals. Metalios recorded one goal and one assist as senior
Chris Perrino (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) totaled five groundballs and five caused turnovers. Sophomore
Matthew Sardis (Bernardsville, N.J.) won 20 of his 28 faceoff attempts and collected nine groundballs while senior
Devin McCabe (New Castle, N.H.) made 10 saves.
Â
- Williams is currently No. 20 in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Rankings by USA Lacrosse Magazine.
