Baseball Falls to Babson by a 14-3 Home Final

THE BASICS:
 
- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Fran O'Brien Field)
 
- Records: MIT (10-15, 5-6 NEWMAC); Babson College (19-11, 8-3 NEWMAC)
 
- Score: Babson College 14, MIT 3 (7 Innings)
 
- The Lead: In the opener of a three-game weekend series on Friday afternoon, the MIT baseball team dropped a 14-3 home final to visiting Babson College in seven innings of play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
- After Babson pushed across an unearned run in the top of the first, the Beavers struck for six runs on five hits in the second for the 7-0 lead. Jack Pirkl and Brant Savage led the way in the inning with two-RBI hits and the score remained that way until the bottom of the fourth.
 
- Senior Graham Cartwright (La Jolla, Calif.) launched his ninth home run of the season with one out in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 7-1 margin. The Beavers answered in the fifth with a five-run inning, paced by a two-run homer by Ike Kiely and a three-run home run to right by Savage.
 
- In the sixth, junior Tyler Godfrey (Rowley, Mass.) singled to left with one out before Cartwright homered for the second time of the game and 10th this season to pull MIT within 12-3 heading to the seventh. Babson scored two more in the top of the seventh, accounting for the 14-3 final score.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Cartwright finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three runs batted in, while first-year Lawrence Tang (Hopkinton, Mass.) was a perfect 3-for-3. Four Beavers picked up multiple hits, led by Savage at 3-for-5 with three runs scored and six runs batted in.
 
- First-year Chase Rubin (Arlington, Va.) took the loss to fall to 2-2 as he allowed seven runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings. Tim Noone improved to 4-1 for the Beavers, scattering six hits and three runs allowed with five strikeouts over 6.1 innings.
