No. 24 Softball Earns Sweep of Smith on Senior Day

- The Lead: The No. 24 MIT softball team earned another NEWMAC sweep as the Engineers outscored Smith, 16-2 in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon on Briggs Field.  
 
Before the start of the afternoon, the Engineers recognized their graduating class of seniors Haley Samuelsen (Houston, Texas), Jordan Sell (Schwenksville, Pa.), and Abby Shull (Cypress, Texas) and graduate student Deb Torres (Portage, Mich.).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. GAME ONE:

- Sophomore Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Fla.) tripled home the first MIT run of the day in the first and later came around to score on a wild pitch. First year Ava Ladd (Austin, Texas) put MIT up four with her two-run double to right in the second.
 
- Smith cut the MIT lead in half in the fourth with a steal of home and an Elinor Washington single to left.
 
- The Engineers responded with a three-run sixth which featured RBI hits from junior Katia Pendowski (Elk Grove Village, Ill.), first year Olivia Scarpaci (Staten Island, N.Y.), and Sell.
 
- Sophomore Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.) tacked on the final run of the day for MIT with a single to right in the sixth as MIT took the 8-2 win.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
 
-  Torres earned her third win of the season as she pitched the first four innings and allowed just two runs on five hits with two walks. First year Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) pitched the final three innings for her third save and allowed just two hits and one strikeout.
 
- Sell led the way for MIT going 3-4 with an RBI in the leadoff spot. Ladd, Adkison, and Pendowski all recorded two hits in the game for MIT.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. GAME TWO:
 
- Samuelsen singled home the first run of the day for the hosts in the second, and sophomore Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) gave MIT a 3-0 lead in the third with a two-run double.
 
- Samuelsen came around to score the fourth run of the day in the fourth and Sell crossed the plate on a bunt from Ladd to make it 5-0.
 
- Back-to-back triples from Ladd and Adkison put MIT up seven, and sophomore Kristen Lee (Freehold, N.J.) gave the Engineers the win with a sacrifice fly.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
 
- Sophomore Becca O'Connor (San Antonio, Texas) got her ninth win of the year with a complete game five-hitter. She did not walk a batter and struck out two Pioneers on the day.
 
- Abigail Flet fell to 5-5 with 5.2 innings pitched. She allowed 11 hits and eight runs (five earned) with one walk and one strikeout.
 
- Ladd went 3-4 with two runs and two RBI and Adkison finished 3-4 with two runs and an RBI.
 
UP NEXT:
 
- MIT returns to action on Friday, April 28 for a NEWMAC doubleheader against Babson. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Briggs Field.
