- The Lead: In the NEWMAC opener on Sunday afternoon, the MIT baseball team took game one from Coast Guard by a 4-2 final before holding off a late rally by the Bears in game two to take the 17-15 win and the road sweep.

Game One
HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Coast Guard got on the board first with single runs in the first and third innings and held that 2-0 lead heading into the top of the fifth inning. MIT first-year
Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) led off the top of the fifth with a solo homer to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. Junior
Tyler Godfrey (Rowley, Mass.) singled to right, followed by the first homer of the season for junior
Kennan Gumbs (New York, N.Y.) as his two-run shot put the Engineers up for good at 3-2.

- In the seventh, junior
Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) singled to right field with two outs to score first-year
Eitan Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) with an insurance run to push the lead to 4-2.

Karl Meyer (Indianapolis, Ind.) got the start for the Engineers and went six innings and left with a 3-2 lead. First-year
Chase Rubin (Arlington, Va.) came on in the seventh and pitched three no-hit innings to preserve the win for MIT.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Schoenfeld went 3-for-5 with one RBI and two stolen bases from the leadoff spot in game one.
Eitan Moore also posted a three-hit day, along with two hits each by
Zev Moore and Godfrey.

- Meyer moves to 2-0 on the season as he scattered five hits with two runs allowed, two walks and six strikeouts. Rubin picked up the save as he allowed no hits, one walk and had two strikeouts.

John Thigpen went 6.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and four runs with three strikeouts to drop to 0-2 overall.

Game Two
HOW IT HAPPENED:

- After Coast Guard got on the board first again for the 1-0 edge, MIT answered with three in the top of the third on an RBI double to center by senior
Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) and a two-RBI single to center from senior
Graham Cartwright (La Jolla, Calif.).
Â
- The Engineers added two more in the fifth with runs batted in from senior
Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) and his brother Jake as MIT extended to a 5-1 lead. The teams traded runs over the next inning before Coast Guard tied the game at 6-6 following a two-run homer by
Greg Boland and
Luke Percifield scoring on a passed ball.

- MIT countered with its highest scoring inning of the season in the top of the eighth as the Engineers picked up eight runs on seven hits to make it a 14-6 game. The key hit in the inning came off the bat of
Zev Moore as he had a bases-clearing triple to drive in three.

- After a three-run eighth for Coast Guard cut the lead to 14-9, MIT added three runs on just one hit to make it a 17-9 contest as the Engineers took advantage of two walks, two wild pitches, a passed ball and a hit batter in the inning.

- The Bears almost came all the way back in the ninth, putting up six runs as they sent six pinch hitters to the plate. With the score at 17-15 and a pair of runners on for Coast Guard, Cartwright moved to the mound and struck out
Tate Scherer to end the game and earn his first save of the year.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Schoenfeld and
Kyle Sonandres picked up three-hit performances in game two, with Kyle leading the MIT offense with five runs batted in. Six Engineers registered multiple hits in the win as the top five batters in the MIT order combined for 12 hits, 15 runs batted in and 10 runs scored.
Jack Steel led the Coast Guard offense with a 3-for-5 day with two runs driven in as their top three hitters had six hits and drove in nine runs.

- First-year
Matthew Spenner (Darien, Conn.) got the start for the Engineers and scattered five hits with no earned runs, one walk and six strikeouts. Sophomore
Ethan Siegel (Austin, Texas) got the win in 1.2 innings of relief as he is now 1-0 on the season.Â
Raymond Priddy took the loss for Coast Guard to fall to 3-3 overall and he allowed seven hits, five runs with one walk and six strikeouts over 3.1 innings.
