Two Top Five Finishes Highlight Weekend for MIT Sailing

The Lead: The MIT sailing team posted two top-five finishes over the weekend as the Engineers sailed in gusty and windy conditions at various points during the weekend. The MIT women's team is ranked 10th overall with the coed team holding a ranking of 15th.

- The event honors the memory of Lynne Marchiando who was a very active student and sailor during her time as an undergraduate at MIT.
 
- The Engineers posted a record of 7-7 during the two-day regatta. They went 3-4 in round one and finished the weekend strong with a 4-3 record in round two.
 
- Junior Sam Bruce (Severna Park, Md.), junior Maks Groom (Seattle, Wash.), and sophomore Julius Heitkoetter (Austin, Texas) rotated skipper duties with graduate student Maaya Prasad (Yorktown, Va.), senior Wendy Wu (Andover, Mass.), senior Abby VanLonkhuyzen (Yarmouth, Maine), and junior Jemma Schroder (Menlo Park, Calif.) on the crew.

- MIT finished the two-day regatta with a record of 8-6 to qualify for the final four races. The Engineers fell to Brown, Tulane, and Yale to earn a fourth-place finish.
 
- Sophomore Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.), graduate student Dana Haig (Beach Haven, N.J.), senior Emily Scherer (Oshkosh, Wis.), and sophomore Lucy Brock (Austin, Texas) handled the skipper duties with sophomore Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.), sophomore Mercedes Escandon (Brick, N.J.), first year Brooke Barry (West Hartford, Conn.), sophomore Shayne Bersin (Port Washington, N.Y.), senior Grace Mao (Overland Park, Kan.), and senior Emily Scherer (Oshkosh, Wis.) on the crew.
 
UP NEXT:

- The Engineers are back in the water next weekend, April 8-9 for a trio of regattas. MIT will compete in the Open New England Team Race Championships, the Emily Wick Trophy, and the Mystic Lake Team Race.
