Sailing Earns Fourth Place Finish at Women's Team Race National Championship

The Lead: The MIT women's sailing team finished fourth overall at the Women's Team Race National Championship against some of the top competition in College Sailing over the weekend. The Engineers also notched an 12th place finish at the Open New England Fleet Race Championship.

- MIT finished fourth overall with a 10-9 record. Round one saw the Engineers go 8-3 and MIT went 2-3 in round two to advance to the top four. Eight of the nine losses for MIT came to the top-three teams (Yale, Stanford, and Brown).  
 
- The Engineers used a variety of crew and skippers to contend with the varying conditions. Skippers during the weekend were: graduate student Dana Haig (Beach Haven, N.J.), sophomore Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.), sophomore Lucy Brock (Austin, Texas), and senior Emily Scherer (Oshkosh, Wis.). The Crew was made up of sophomore Shayne Bersin (Port Washington, N.Y.), sophomore Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.), sophomore Mercedes Escandon (Brick, N.J.), graduate student Zoe Fisher (River Forest, Ill.), senior Grace Mao (Overland Park, Kan.), and Scherer.

OPEN NEW ENGLAND FLEET RACE CHAMPIONSHIPS | New London, Conn. | 12th of 18
 
- The Engineers finished 12th with 284 total points. MIT posted 144 points in the 'A' Division and 140 points in the 'B' Division.
 
- MIT had five top-five finishes during the weekend and 14 top-10 finishes.
 
- Junior Sam Bruce (Severna Park, Md.) and graduate student Maaya Prasad (Yorktown, Va.) steered the 'A' division boat to a 12th-place finish with eight top-10 finishes.  
 
- Junior Maks Groom (Seattle, Wash.) and senior Wendy Wu (Andover, Mass.) earned six top-10 finishes to finish 11th in the 'B' Division.
 
UP NEXT:

- MIT will have time off before competing in the Fleet Race National Championships in Kings Point, N.Y. The races will take place from May 23-June 2 beginning with the Women's Fleet Race National Championships.
