Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Falls to Babson, 15-14, in Overtime, in the NEWMAC Championship

THE BASICS:

- Score: Babson College 15, MIT 14 (OT)

- Records: MIT (12-6); Babson (12-4)

- Location: Babson Park, Mass. (MacDowell Field)

- The Lead: After a back-and-forth second half, top-seeded Babson College scored 1:05 into overtime to defeat No. 3 seed MIT, 15-14, in the NEWMAC Men's Lacrosse Championship on Saturday afternoon. Graduate student Ryan Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) powered the Engineers with seven goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 1:53 expired. Junior Heath Nilsen (Carlsbad, Calif.) scored on a feed from senior Tory Lentine (Flemington, N.J.) and Gebhardt quickly followed with an unassisted goal. Babson responded with three straight goals to end the quarter with a slight edge.

- The Beavers posted back-to-back goals, including a man-up strike, during the first 1:12 of the second quarter. The Engineers put together a 3-1 run which brought them within one (6-5) at the eight-minute mark. Nilsen, Gebhardt, and sophomore Nick Stiles (New Canaan, Conn.) each recorded unassisted strikes for the visitors. Following almost four minutes of scoreless play, Babson found the back of the net and kicked off an exchange of goals which moved the score to 8-6 at halftime.

- MIT controlled the action in the third quarter as it outscored the Beavers, 4-1. Gebhardt registered a solo blast and then first year Zach Bleil (New Canaan, Conn.) buried a man-up strike. Nilsen set up Gebhardt, putting the Engineers in front, however, Babson evened the score at nine almost a minute later. MIT claimed a 10-9 edge courtesy of Nilsen's solo effort with 3:17 left in the period.

- The Beavers went back in front by rattling off three straight goals, including back-to-back man-up goals, during the first 4:17 of the fourth quarter. The Engineers replied with a 4-1 run which resulted in a 14-13 advantage with 3:10 left to play. Gebhardt scored twice as first year Garrett Campagna (Lancaster, Pa.) and Bleil both found the back of the net with Bleil's strike giving MIT the lead. Babson, however, tallied the equalizer 42 seconds later. Both squads had chances to end the game in regulation as the Engineers registered four shots, one of which was saved, while the Beavers' attempts on goal were wide and high.

- In the extra session, Babson won the opening faceoff and then unleased a shot which was saved by senior goalie Devin McCabe (New Castle, N.H.). However, during the clearing attempt, MIT turned the ball over and it led to a quick goal by the Beavers.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Nilsen finished with three goals and an assist while Bleil recorded two goals. Senior Chris Perrino (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) produced five groundballs and two caused turnovers as Stiles and senior Andrew Johnson (Dover, Mass.) both collected four groundballs. Sophomore Matthew Sardis (Bernardsville, N.J.) won 19 of his 32 faceoff attempts and tallied 10 groundballs while senior Andrew Palleiko (Hopkinton, Mass.) contributed three caused turnovers. McCabe racked up a career-high 16 saves.
