The Lead: The No. 37 MIT men's tennis team snapped an 11-match winning streak for the No. 21 Swarthmore Garnet as the Engineers earned an exciting 5-4 win in the second round of the NCAA Regional to advance to tomorrow's regional championship.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- MIT fell behind in doubles with a loss in No. 2, but senior
Derek Shen (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) and junior
Joseph Li (Naperville, Ill.) defeated
Rushil Patel and
Charley Foece 8-4 in three doubles, and junior
Kailas Kahler (Pawtucket, R.I.) and senior
Daniel Papacica (Carmel, Calif.) took No. 1 doubles 8-6.
- The Garnet opened singles play with wins in No. 1 and No. 6, but Papacica defeated Force, 6-4, 6-4 in two singles to tie the match at three.
- Sophomore
Ryan Xiao (Cary, N.C.) put MIT up one with a 6-4, 6-4 win in three singles, but the Garnet took No. 5 singles to set up a decisive match in three singles between Shen and
Max Lindstrom. Lindstrom took the first set 6-4 before Shen rallied to win the next two, 7-6, 6-4 to give MIT the win.
UP NEXT:
- The Engineers will take on host and No. 2 Tufts tomorrow in the Regional Championship. The match is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
