Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Babson Holds off MIT, 13-10, to Capture NEWMAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship

THE BASICS:

- Score: Babson College 13, No. 22 MIT 10

- Records: MIT (16-3); Babson (12-7)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Jack Barry Field)

- The Lead: Back-to-back goals by No. 2 seed Babson College early in the fourth quarter created enough of a cushion as it held on for a 13-10 victory over top-seeded and nationally ranked No. 22 MIT in the NEWMAC Women's Lacrosse Championship on Saturday. Senior Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) paced the Engineers with three goals, one assist, and two draw controls while Erin Jayne powered the Beavers with three goals and two assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT generated three goals during the first 5:24 of the game. Sophomore Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) buried a free position shot while first year Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) and senior Grace Ann Carlson (Charleston, S.C.) followed with unassisted goals. Jayne put Babson on the scoreboard when she redirected a feed from Emily Curtis at the 7:18 mark. The Beavers then added goals by Claudia Dodge and Jessica Evans to even the score at three at the end of the frame.

- Babson carried the momentum into the second quarter as it outscored the Engineers, 5-1, and built an 8-4 lead at halftime. Curtis scored twice while Dodge and Jayne both produced one goal and one assist. Rabenold netted MIT's lone goal which came midway through the quarter.

- Exactly 1:30 into the third quarter, Evans capped the Beavers' 9-1 run with an unassisted goal. A defensive battle ensued until Rabenold found the back of the net with 5:28 on the clock. The Engineers narrowed the gap to 9-6 when Thomas redirected a feed from junior Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.) almost four minutes later. Claire Connolly ended Babson's scoring drought with 26 seconds remaining, but Arterburn corralled the draw control and set up Pyon in a span of 13 seconds.

- MIT continued to attack, coming within one (10-9) at the 13:22 mark of the fourth quarter. Senior Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) connected on a feed from Pyon after 1:02 expired and then Rabenold scored 36 seconds later. The Beavers replied with back-to-back goals from Jayne and Evans, moving the score to 12-9 with 11:17 on the clock. A goal by Arterburn just over three minutes later kept the Engineers within striking distance, however, Babson goalie Kathleen Murphy made a pair of saves before Curtis completed the hat trick with 2:58 left to play. Murphy came up with another save with 1:44 remaining and after an MIT turnover, the Beavers were able to run out the clock.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Pyon finished with two goals and an assist while Arterburn totaled one goal, two assists, and two draw controls. First year Gwen Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) posted four groundballs and two draw controls as junior Grace Harrington (Seattle, Wash.) generated two caused turnovers. In net, senior Abigail Kolyer (Manhasset, N.Y.) registered six saves and four groundballs.

- Curtis tallied three goals, one assist, and two caused turnovers while Dodge recorded two goals, two assists, and two caused turnovers. Evans had a hat trick as Connolly contributed 12 draw controls and two caused turnovers. Murphy ended the day with 10 saves and three groundballs.

- Babson won its ninth NEWMAC Championship and Jayne was named the Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
