Sailing Takes 11th at ICSA Open Fleet Race National Championship

THE LEAD: The MIT sailing team held off Fordham University to finish 11th out of 18 teams at the ICSA Open Fleet Race National Championships.
 
SEMIFINALS
  • After the first day of competition in the Eastern Semifinal, the Engineers were in 10th place with 133 points.
  • The 'A' Division boat of junior Sam Bruce (Severna Park, Md.), graduate student Maaya Prasad (Yorktown, Va.), and sophomore Nicholas Abate (Kemah, Texas) finished eighth with 67 points. They finished the day strong with two second-place finishes.
  • In the 'B' Division, graduate student Dana Haig (Beach Haven, N.J.), sophomore Julius Heitkoetter (Austin, Texas), sophomore Shayne Bersin (Port Washington, N.Y.), and junior Jemma Schroder (Menlo Park, Calif.) placed 11th with 66 points and two top-five finishes.
  • The Engineers had a great day two, jumping up to seventh by the end of the day to qualify for the Championships. MIT finished with 211 points.
  • Bruce, Heitkoetter, Prasad, and Abate totaled 98 points in the 'A' Division to place sixth. Overall, they had six top-five finishes and one win.
  • Haig, junior Maks Groom (Seattle, Wash.), Heitkoetter, Bersin, and Schroder tallied 113 points in the 'B' Division to finish in seventh. The team put together six top-five finishes. 
FINALS
  • After day one of the Championship, the Engineers were in eighth place with 117 points.
  • The 'A' division boat of Bruce and Prasad finished sixth with 51 points and two second-place finishes. The 'B' division boat of Haig and Schroder finished 12th with 66 points.
  • MIT finished in 11th with 185 points, holding off the Rams who finished with 186 points.
  • The Engineers 'A' Division boat of Bruce and Prasad finished 12th with 96 points and the 'B' Division boat of Haig and Schroder tallied 89 points to finish 12th and capped the day with a second-place finish.
