- The Lead: The MIT men's soccer team held off a late Coast Guard rally as the Engineers earned their first victory of the 2023 season with a 3-2 win over the Bears on the road on Sunday in the team's NEWMAC opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After playing 41 minutes of scoreless soccer, MIT quickly took a 2-0 lead with goals 15 seconds apart. First year
Nico Mangiafico (Farmington, Conn.) opened the scoring at 41:06 and then sent a pass to senior
Garrett Robinson (Winfield, Ill.) who scored at 41:21.

Billy Menken (Woodbury, Minn.) made it a 3-0 Engineer lead as he took a pass from first year
Dilin Meloni (Needham, Mass.) and found the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

- The Bears got into the goal column at 58:54 as
Brennen King sent a pass to
Cole Miller for his second goal of the season.

- Coast Guard made it a one-goal game on a goal from
Aidan Marroquin at 83:06, but MIT held on for the 3-2 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- MIT held a 14-9 advantage in shots, but the Bears had a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Engineers also held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

- Senior
Lukas Hanson-Puffer (London, England) made four saves on the day to improve to 1-1-1.
Wolfgang Pfleghar stopped one MIT shot and is now 1-1-1.

- Robinson and Mangiafico both recorded their first goals of the season.
