No. 20 Women's Volleyball Sweeps Mount Holyoke and Westfield State

- The Lead: The No. 20 MIT women's volleyball team did not drop a set as it defeated NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke College (25-9, 25-15, 25-20) and Westfield State University (25-6, 25-10, 25-13) on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – MATCH ONE vs. Mount Holyoke:
 
- Set 1: A strong serving run by junior Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.), which featured three aces, helped MIT establish a 15-3 advantage. The Engineers went on to cruise to a 25-9 victory.
 
- Set 2: Holding an 11-10 lead, a kill by sophomore Claire Underwood (Yorba Linda, Calif.) sparked a 10-1 run. MIT maintained a comfortable cushion as it went on to capture a 25-15 win.
 
- Set 3: Trailing 7-6, a hitting error by Mount Holyoke kicked off a 9-3 run that put the Engineers ahead for good. The Lyons stayed within striking distance as a kill narrowed the gap to 18-17. MIT responded with an Underwood kill which led to a 7-3 match-ending run.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Senior Consecrata Rozario (Cary, N.C.) led all players with 10 kills on 16 errorless attempts as junior Lauren Keller (Albuquerque, N.M.) followed with nine kills. Sophomore Ali Gibbs (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) produced seven kills and four blocks while senior Emily Cheng (Sunnyvale, Calif.) and first year Kayleigh May (Camarillo, Calif.) posted 28 and 11 assists, respectively.
 
- Junior Ottavia Personeni (Bethesda, Md.) paced the Engineers with 13 digs, followed by 10 from senior Ashley Margetts (Brownsburg, Ind.) and eight by sophomore Daphne Gavros (Bel Tiburon, Calif.).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – MATCH TWO vs. Westfield State:
 
- Set 1: MIT raced out to a 9-1 lead and never looked back as it recorded a 25-6 win.
 
- Set 2: The Engineers picked up five of the first six points before going on to claim a 25-10 victory.
 
- Set 3: Trailing 7-6, a kill by first year Eileen Sadati (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) followed by back-to-back kills from first year Peyton Brown (Parker, Colo.) gave MIT a slight edge. Westfield State stayed close as a hitting error by the Engineers trimmed the deficit to 14-12. Sparked by a kill from Sadati, MIT put together an 11-1 run to wrap up the match. During the final stretch, Margetts recorded back-to-back aces while Personeni produced three of her own.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- May totaled 29 assists and five aces as the Engineers hit .606 in the match. Brown finished with 11 kills, equaling the total by the Owls, while Underwood, Sadati, and first year Elise Echarte (Miami Beach, Fla.) each posted seven kills. Margetts generated seven digs and five aces as Gavros chipped in six digs.
