Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

No. 10 MIT Defeats Suffolk in Three Sets

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 10 MIT 3, Suffolk University 0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-14)

- Records: No. 10 MIT (4-0), Suffolk (1-4)

- Location: Boston, Mass. (Smith Court)

- The Lead: For the fourth match in a row, No. 10 MIT women's volleyball did not drop a set as it defeated Suffolk University, 25-16, 25-18, 25-14, in non-conference action on Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Set 1: Suffolk slowly built a 7-3 lead, but MIT battled back and eventually went ahead, 12-9, courtesy of back-to-back kills by junior Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.). After a serving error by the Engineers, the visitors rattled off four straight points to create some breathing room before going on to capture a 25-16 win.

- Set 2: MIT jumped out to a 6-1 lead, however, the Rams chipped away at the deficit as an ace narrowed the gap to 12-11. The Engineers replied with an 8-1 run which was capped by a block from junior Lauren Keller (Albuquerque, N.M.) and sophomore Ali Gibbs (Chagrin Falls, Ohio). An exchange of points followed, moving the score to 22-16. A kill by Gibbs coupled with a Suffolk hitting error resulted in set point, but a serving error and a kill extended the frame for the Rams. The comeback attempt was thwarted due to a hitting error.

- Set 3: After a back-and-forth start, MIT gradually established a 13-5 advantage. The Engineers maintained their comfortable cushion down the stretch as kills by senior Consecrata Rozario (Cary, N.C.), Keller, and sophomore Claire Underwood (Yorba Linda, Calif.) secured the 25-14 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Keller led all players with nine kills while hitting .444 and posting three blocks. Gragg finished with seven kills and a .389 hitting percentage as Rozario recorded six kills on nine errorless attempts and added three blocks.

- Senior Emily Cheng (Sunnyvale, Calif.) tallied 26 assists, a team-high eight digs, and three aces as junior Ottavia Personeni (Bethesda, Md.) produced seven digs and two aces. Sophomore Daphne Gavros (Bel Tiburon, Calif.) bolstered the back row with five digs and two aces.

UP NEXT:

- MIT returns to action on Friday, Sept. 8 when it hosts the two-day MIT Invitational. The Engineers will kick things off with a 6:00 p.m. match against Ithaca College.
