Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Springfield Tops Men’s Basketball, 80-69

THE BASICS:

- Score: Springfield College 80, MIT 69

- Records: MIT (2-16, 1-8 NEWMAC), Springfield (6-12, 3-6 NEWMAC)

- Location: Springfield, Mass. (Blake Arena)

- The Lead: Despite a 27-point effort from first year Isaac Dobie (Kitty Hawk, N.C.), the MIT men's basketball team fell to Springfield College, 80-69, in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon. Dobie's game-high 27 points featured a trio of three pointers and a 12-of-13 effort from the free throw line while also producing four rebounds and two steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Springfield jumped out to a 9-2 lead over the first five minutes of the game, before the Engineers were able to race out on a 7-0 run over a 1:11 stretch jump started by sophomore Tim Minicozzi's (Belmont, Mass.) trey.

- The Pride answered with a 6-0 run and eventually got out to a 22-14 advantage at the 10:40 mark of the first half. However, back-to-back Minicozzi threes closed the gap as the two teams traded leads down the stretch with Springfield taking a 36-33 halftime advantage.

- In the second half, junior Spencer Lin (Menlo Park, Calif.) immediately drained a three. But the Pride used an 11-2 run over a 2:52 stretch to gain a 47-39 advantage early in the second half. A 12-2 MIT run over a 2:01 spurt propelled by eight points from Dobie, who bookended the run with a trey and an and-one, once again evened the score at 53 with 11:51 remaining. Springfield countered by slowly building a lead the Engineers could not overcome as a three-pointer moved the score to 71-61 with just over six minutes left.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Also finishing with double-digit efforts for the Engineers was Minicozzi with an 18-point, six rebound outing. He also added three assists and was 4-for-9 from deep in the game. Lin led all players with a career-high 12 rebounds to go along with five assists as first year Merlin Gogolin (New York, N.Y.) registered seven rebounds and three assists.

- Dobie recorded his fifth 20-point performance this season and the fourth in the last five games.

- The Pride led the way in rebounds (51-33), points in the paint (34-18), bench points (28-3), second-chance points (18-5), and points off turnovers (18-10).
