The Lead: Maine Maritime Academy outscored MIT, 21-7, in the fourth quarter to reclaim the lead and capture a 68-61 non-conference women's basketball win on Saturday afternoon. Graduate student
Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) generated a game-high 31 points while junior
Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) was second among all players with 23 points.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- MMA jumped out to a 15-6 lead with 5:45 on the clock. MIT responded with a 10-3 run that spanned 3:09 and featured five points by both Antonakakis and Choi. The Mariners replied with a layup during their next possession, making the score 20-16 at the end of the first quarter.
Â
- The Engineers stayed close in the second stanza as they came within one point on five occasions, the last at 31-30 courtesy of a three-pointer by Choi at the 4:35 mark. The score remained unchanged until MMA knocked down a trey of its own with 1:29 left and then added a layup with five seconds to go. A free throw by Antonakakis ended MIT's scoring drought and narrowed the gap to 36-31 at halftime.
Â
- Sparked by Choi's three-pointer 31 seconds into the third quarter, the Engineers put together a 14-2 run during the next 3:12. MIT maintained its small cushion as a pair of layups from Choi during the final 50 seconds gave the visitors a 54-47 advantage.
Â
- The Mariners chipped away at the deficit and then claimed a 60-57 lead following back-to-back layups with 3:07 left to play. Two free throws by Choi 14 seconds later kept the Engineers within striking distance. However, MMA produced a layup and a 4-for-4 performance at the charity stripe to make the score 66-59 with 26.6 seconds to go. Junior
Olivia Joseph (Newtown Square, Pa.) knocked in a layup during MIT's next possession, but the Mariners replied with one of their own to secure the win.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Antonakakis added six rebounds and three assists while Joseph notched five rebounds. Junior
Elise Harvey (Wayland, Mass.) contributed five rebounds and two steals.
Â
- Antonakakis recorded the seventh 30-point performance of her career and the first this season. She also broke the MIT record for career three-point field goal attempts as her total of 555 eclipsed the mark of 554 set by
Kara Holinski '19.
Â
- The Engineers had a 15-14 edge in points off turnovers, however, MMA led the way in rebounds (46-37), bench scoring (28-4), fastbreak points (14-5), points in the paint (30-10), and second chance points (11-6).
