Women's Openweight Crew Races at Head Of The Charles; Finishes Fourth in Women's Club Eights

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The MIT women's openweight crew team earned a fourth-place finish in the Women's Club Eights on Saturday at the 2024 Head Of The Charles Regatta (HOCR) on the Charles River. The fourth place finish in the event was a program record for the Engineers.

The Engineers competed in both the Women's Club Eights and the Women's Club Fours on Saturday. Founded in 1965, the HOCR is the world's largest Regatta featuring many of the top rowers, teams and clubs from around the world. 

THE BASICS: 

  • Women's Club Fours: 25th of 49 
  • Women's Club Eights: 4th and 16th of 42 

RACE BY RACE: 

  • The Varsity 4+ (V4+) was the first team on the water for MIT at the 2024 HOCR. Racing with Bow #4 the Engineers had a steady rhythm and put down a solid time, finishing in the middle of the pack in the Women's Club Fours with a time of 19:28.586. 
  • The MIT Varsity 8+ (V8+) set the pace for MIT's two strong entries in the Women's Club Eights. The V8+ charged hard at UMass and passed them after the Anderson Bridge. After that it was clear sailing to a 4th place finish, the best in program history. MIT's top boat trailed only Yale, Raddcliffe, and Princeton in finish time. MIT's time of 16:36.359 trailed Yale by a margin of 0:38.504.
  • The Second Varsity 8+ (2V8+) finished the Charles River course in 17:20.921 good for 16th among the 42 teams in the event. The crew finishing ahead of Patriot League rivals Holy Cross and both entries from local rival Boston College.

  • MIT will close out the fall portion of the 2024-25 schedule at the Head of the Fish Regatta on Saturday, October 26 at Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
